Bribing new recruits with alcohol

States, including Wisconsin, weigh lowering drinking age
Legislation introduced in Kentucky, Wisconsin and South Carolina would lower the drinking age for military personnel only. A planned ballot initiative in Missouri would apply to everyone 18 and older. An initiative in the works in South Dakota would allow all 19- and 20-year-olds to buy low-alcohol beer.

first they bribe them with money, several thousand sounds great to a teenagers. Now they want to bribe them with alcohol. It's either all or nothing. If one 18 year old can drink the rest should be able to also.

1. I hope no one would enlist just because they want to be able to buy beer.
I'm sure most of them can get some alcohol whether it's legal or not.

2. I always thought that was back-assward..
You sign your name on the line to defend the nation and possibly die for it, and you can't consume alcohol? When I was in "A" School in San Diego, back in the late 80's, we were permitted to drink on base. Just so we wouldn't go down to TJ and get into a mess of trouble. I can't understand why that isn't the case throughout the country. As long as you drink & stay on Base, it should be allowed.:patriot:

3. This will come as no suprise to anyone in the military.
We got drunk the night before we were to leave for bootcamp. The convenience store acroos the street from MEPS in Jacksonville will sell to anyone who comes in from MEPS, under 21 or not. The cashier even said, "If you're old enough to fight for your country, you should be old enough to buy a beer."

And then they wonder why I tested positive for dope, 4 years later.

4. They should raise the drinking age to 85. Alcohol is poison
After 85 go ahead and kill yourself with the shit if you like.

5. IIRC in Wisconsin minors can be served, if accompanied by a parent or guardian
so why lower the age limit? I seem to remember hearing that pov on WPR during a show on lowering the drinking age a couple years back.

7. Seems to me......
It seems to me that telling an 18 year old he/she can buy a beer only if they bring Mom with them is going to sound a bit silly.

9. Yes, I suppose that's true. But what if its a beer after fishing with Dad and Unca Mike
For that matter it could be before going out raising hell with Unca Mike.

Mike's got no freaken sense at all.

10. When I first got to Vietnam I could not buy alcohol. We had ration cards for booze.
I was not 21 so I did not get one each month like the older guys did. They gave me their cards at the end of the month when they got the new one. Usually there was still some gin available on the cards so that was my drink. I took the cards to the PX and got gin. I couldn't drink and vote but I could die.

11. This seems to imply being in the military makes you better than other people
I would argue that being a 19 year old firefighter is probably more dangerous and more noble profession than say being a predator remote operator for the airforce.

The only logical solution is to raise the driving age to 18, with the possible exception of agriculture and to lower the drinking age to 18.

12. Having the drinking age at 21 is ridiculous anyway
Are 18 year olds adults or not?

Land of the free, home of the brave indeed.
