China bans live Tiananmen video during Olympics

By CHARLES HUTZLER
Associated Press
China issues 'Most Wanted' list for Tibet rioters BEIJING — Don't expect to turn on your TV during the Beijing Olympics and see live shots of Tiananmen Square, where Chinese troops crushed pro-democracy protests nearly two decades ago.

Apparently unnerved by recent unrest among Tibetans and fearful of protests in the heart of the capital, China has told broadcast officials it will bar live television shots from the vast square during the games.

3. I'm glad China has the Olympics.
They deserve it more than the US does.

6. Reasons they do.
1. They have no foreign military bases, unlike the US does.
2. They have no troops invading sovereign, recognized countries, like the US does.
3. They don't finance and plan fascist coups against democratically-elected government, like the US does.
4. They spend a smaller portion of their GDP on military expenditures than the US, setting a good example for the world.

After centuries of humiliation at the hands of imperial powers, China has finally started coming into its own, and I think it's a great thing. Yes, they have a long way to come both in terms of economic development and social/political change, but the movement has been in the right direction, unlike in this country where we're stepping backwards.

9. I suggest you read the Human Rights Watch report on China.
Your reasons are rather dubious and slanted at best.

11. I've read it.
What about this?:

The Human Rights Record in the United States in 2006
http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=viewArticle&code=20070310&articleId=5038

There is much that can be condemned in the US, UK, and in China as well. But I think the basic facts I pointed out mean that China's role in the global stage is not as damaging as that of the US and UK.

14. China actually has invaded countries without good reason. Vietnam in the 1970s had done nothing
to deserve a Chinese invasion. Same thing goes for India in 1962. China is hardly an angel. Also, their involvement in global economic affairs is hardly altruistic. They sell arms all over the place too. Their treatment of domestic affairs, where they have a full fifth of the world's population, is appalling.

16. Not to mention they invaded and occupied Tibet, doing horrible things to its people. nt
And their perpetual threats to invade Taiwan.

18. Sorry to burst your bubble, but China shares a tremendous amount
of responsibility for the genocide taking place in Darfur!

"It's time, now, to begin shaming China---demanding that if the Beijing government is going to host the premier international event, the Summer Olympic Games of 2008, they must be responsible international partners. China's slogan for these Olympic Games---"One world, one dream"---is a ghastly irony, given Beijing's complicity in the Darfur genocide (see the website for China's hosting of the Olympic Games at http://www.olympic.org/uk/games/beijing/index_uk.asp). The Chinese leadership must understand that if they refuse to use their unrivaled political, economic, and diplomatic leverage with Khartoum to secure access for the force authorized under UN Security Council Resolution 1706, then they will face an extremely vigorous, unrelenting, and omnipresent campaign to shame them over this refusal."

5. I say give it to London in 2012
because they invaded and occupied a sovereign country illegally. :sarcasm:

By the way hasn't the US government banned showing coffins coming back from Iraq?

7. No one here would complain if London, capital of the neocolonial UK, hosted the Olympics.
While foreign troops oppress and occupy Iraq, who here would object to London hosting the Olympics?
