Welcome to the outrageous, advantageous, contagious DUzy Awards, a compendium of star-spangled amusement from this week on DU. Congratulations to this week's winners!

OP by Connie_Corleone: Obama goes to a predominately black church!!!!!!!!!!!OMG!! His pastor railed against rich white people!! HOW DARE HE!! Obama's church promotes the BLACK FAMILY!!!!!!! OH DEAR GOD! THE HORROR! THE HORROR!
Reverend Wright said that 9/11 was America's chickens coming home to roost! NO PREACHER WOULD EVER SAY SUCH A THING!!
Okay. Falwell and Robertson blamed 9/11 on the "sins" of America and God allowed the terrorist attacks to happen for that reason, but that's different. THEY WERE WHITE!!
OH MY GOD! This black man, Barack Obama, might really win this whole thing!! We've gotta stop him!

You *do* know you're a member here... right?Low expectations breed the irrational love of mediocrity. Hence DU.It really must suck for you to have demeaned yourself by wallowing in such mediocrity for 17,531 posts since 2001.
One could just as easily say that knee-jerk defeatists wouldn't know a positive step forward if it came to Sunday dinner and slapped them in the balls...becauase knee-jerk defeatists need to be righteous martyrs as they step backwards with the rest of us mediocre specimens, for that somehow feels like progress to them.
Sounds kinda self-absorbed to me, but what do I know, right? Go figure. It takes all kinds, I guess.
Or something.

GD, March 14, 2008: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x3009272 OP by alcibiades_mystery: The Rezko Dilemma (MEMO!!!)MEMORANDUM (Confidential)
FROM: MARK PENN
TO: Creative Team
DATE: March 14, 2007
SUBJECT: Rezko Brand Name, Take 2
In light of our successes in Ohio and Texas, and our recent strategic push on Reverend Wright, we have decided that it's time to revisit the Rezko issue. Of course, as was discussed in January, this whole Rezko business has brought to light a very vexing problem.
Should branding products refer to Mr. Rezko as Antoin, thereby linking him with the "cheese-eating surrender monkey" stereotype of the French, or should they refer to him as Tony, thereby linking him with various stereotypical mafiosi? One can see the plain benefits of each as a matter of substantial political discussion, but only ONE avenue will do if we're trying to brand a new product.
Research has shown that the electorate cannot retain the phrase "Antoin 'Tony'" as a single entity, although test audiences did seem capable of remembering "Tony 'the Lid' Rezco," with the likely explanation of our focus group screeners being that nicknames tend to have more sticking value when they refer to inanimate objects or bodily characteristics. "Fat Tony" worked as well, for instance, as did "Tan Tony."
Research has also shown that the name "Antoin" evokes association of homosexuality in between 16 and 23% of male African Americans, so we might be able to peel up to 2.5% of that demographic away by so branding. Like I said, it's a vexing problem.
Howie W. has suggested that we use Antoin in major urban areas, and Tony in rural areas (esp. in PA!!), but production predicts that such a distribution might run up printing costs, while I personally think it would just end up diluting the brand image. Bottom line, people: we have to pick one. So, get back to me by close of business Monday, March 17 with your choice and some demographic evidence for justification. Two major research areas:
1) Who do rural Pennsylvanians distrust more: the French or the mafia?
2) Will using "Tony" in Philadelphia actually hurt our numbers in South Philly and the suburbs?
Let's get cracking, people!!!

Seriously? People recommended she diet? A surgeon even looked to her as a potential client.
< I've been surprised by critical comments regarding my weight and body shape. It recently reached a ridiculous level when someone handed me a business card for a plastic surgeon and suggested I needed liposuction. I am proud of my curves and have always loved my fuller figure, as should every woman who is not a size "0". I want to be a positive role model for my little sister and all of the other young women who read my blog and help perpetuate a more positive image for women, regardless of their body size. I feel empowered to tell everyone that it's important to maintain a healthy weight that works for them - not everyone is going to be model thin, nor should they expect to be. Of course, I stopped and got out, filled with despair, to survey the damage. My flashlight revealed that the road was covered with nails!
Then I heard wolves howling! A pack of them was circling, preparing to rush me and tear me limb from limb!
Just at that moment, another car pulled up, ingeniously avoiding the nails. Five men jumped out. While one held the wolves at bay, snarling horribly at them, the other four swept the nails off the road and replaced my tires with spares they had brought with them. I was saved!
They refused to accept payment. "If you want to thank us," the four said together, "just vote for Obama!"
"What about you?" I asked the fourth man, the brave fellow who had faced down the wolves.
"I'm an Edwards guy," he said, a note of sadness in his voice. "But -- " he shrugged " -- you know."
"I hear you, brother," I said.
Then we all drove away.
I'll always wonder if those wolves were intelligent enough to scatter those nails, or if it was done by Hillary Clinton. I guess we'll never know.

You know, I was enjoying this little battle for awhile. I was enjoying watching the back and forth and watching people get all upset about something that was said about their candidate, only to turn around and do the same thing to someone else .
But then something happened. Everything took a hard turn to the right. All of a sudden the most important things in this race are some washed up political hack who woke up and shot off her mouth, and the other candidate's CHURCH. Yeah his CHURCH. You know what? you want to base your vote on something some political hack said or on something the pastor of a candidate's church said? Then you all get what you fucking deserve.
Now pardon me, I need to go where some right wing hack can properly attack me for being a "latte liberal, birkenstock wearing, trust fund baby", because when a so-called progressive tries those attacks they just look like pathetic morons.

GDP, March 17, 2008: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x5126980 OP by jgraz: BREAKING: New Scandal Rocks Obama CampaignMarch 17th, 2008. 12:18 pmTroubling questions emerge about Obama campaign staffCandidate admits several more advisors "may not be Martin Luther King, Jr."The Barack Obama campaign said today that they were looking into new allegations that several of the candidate's campaign advisors were not, in fact, Martin Luther King, Jr. This new scandal, coming so close on the heals of My-Retired-Pastor-is-not-Martin-Luther-King-Jr-gate could spell serious trouble for Obama's bid to be Black President of the United States.
"In earlier campaigns, only the candidate was expected to be Dr. King," said Black Spokesperson Jesse Jackson. Jackson, whose own 1988 campaign for Black President collapsed amid rumors that he, himself, was not Martin Luther King, Jr., said the new requirements that a candidate's staff, family and acquaintances consist of no one but the slain civil rights leader may be difficult to overcome.
Senator Obama addressed the issue himself in a phone interview this morning. "I assure you that we take these charges very seriously," he said. "If anyone on my staff or advisory board can be shown to not be Martin Luther King, Jr., they will no longer be a part of my campaign."
Obama did not say whether he would reject or denounce such staffers. He did, however, vehemently deny rumors that he had ever laughed at a black comedian who was not Bill Cosby or listened to any black musician who was not Hootie and/or the Blowfish.
Hillary Clinton's campaign responded with a brief statement by Chief Campaign Strategist, Mark Penn. "Enough with the math and the insurmountable leads," said Penn. "The Democratic party cannot afford to nominate a candidate for Black President who the white voters of Pennsylvania are not comfortable with."
Penn took care to downplay charges of race-baiting on the part of the Clinton campaign. "This has nothing to do with race. The people of the United State of Pennsylvania will happily support a black candidate, as long as he and all his friends, family and associates are absolutely above reproach in everything they do or say."
Penn ended his statement without taking questions, citing a previous commitment to lead the weekly Atrocity Glossing seminar at Blackwater USA.

I remember, it was quite a harrowing ordeal judging by the first hand accountsHillary had just disembarked, when the tarmac was rushed by about 20 armed gunmen. Hillary took charge of the situation and while she covered the rest of the party with her AK, they were able to scramble to safety.
If I recall correctly she ran out of ammo when 30 of the 40 gunmen had been killed. The remaining gunmen she had to take care of in hand-to-hand combat.
When she was done, 70 dead terrorists lay on the tarmac. It was a glorious victory.

Everyone's memory was still fresh. I still had all of my notes. There hadn't been a lot of time to doctor or edit any videos or websites. But the Obama camp chose to remain silent at that time. I have repeatedly called the campaign and the church, asking for an interview and mentioning the July 22 date in the messages I've left.
If Obama wasn't there, they should have spoken up right away -- immediately after the article was published. I'd bring in my notes, they'd produce their videotape, and we would get everything cleared up right away. I stand behind my story, but if I was wrong, Newsmax would have published a retraction and that would have been the end of it.
Now, after everyone's memory has faded,
my notes have been taken to some landfill and there has been plenty of time to doctor the videos and the websites, the Obama campaign tries to deny he was there? They could have nipped this little problem in the bud if Obama really was not there, and they had chosen to speak up..."

GDP, March 18, 2008: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x5131508 OP by reflection: OUTRAGEOUS! Obama sexism runs rampant in big speech! It took me a few minutes to realize how close I came to being fooled - but the scales have fallen from my eyes and thank goodness, I can see this misogynistic charlatan for what he is. I submit the following excerpts as proof:
excerpt -
------
This time we want to talk about the men and women of every color and creed who serve together, and fight together, and bleed together under the same proud flag. We want to talk about how to bring them home from a war that never should’ve been authorized and never should’ve been waged, and we want to talk about how we’ll show our patriotism by caring for them, and their families, and giving them the benefits they have earned.
I would not be running for President if I didn’t believe with all my heart that this is what the vast majority of Americans want for this country. This union may never be perfect, but generation after generation has shown that it can always be perfected. And today, whenever I find myself feeling doubtful or cynical about this possibility, what gives me the most hope is the next generation – the young people whose attitudes and beliefs and openness to change have already made history in this election.
There is one story in particularly that I’d like to leave you with today – a story I told when I had the great honor of speaking on Dr. King’s birthday at his home church, Ebenezer Baptist, in Atlanta.
------
(Note the first letters of each paragraph. He is making a thinly-veiled reference to a 'tit'. Clearly a sexist male code word for his woman-hating supporters. BUT WAIT, there's more)
------
But the remarks that have caused this recent firestorm weren’t simply controversial. They weren’t simply a religious leader’s effort to speak out against perceived injustice. Instead, they expressed a profoundly distorted view of this country – a view that sees white racism as endemic, and that elevates what is wrong with America above all that we know is right with America; a view that sees the conflicts in the Middle East as rooted primarily in the actions of stalwart allies like Israel, instead of emanating from the perverse and hateful ideologies of radical Islam.
As such, Reverend Wright’s comments were not only wrong but divisive, divisive at a time when we need unity; racially charged at a time when we need to come together to solve a set of monumental problems – two wars, a terrorist threat, a falling economy, a chronic health care crisis and potentially devastating climate change; problems that are neither black or white or Latino or Asian, but rather problems that confront us all.
Given my background, my politics, and my professed values and ideals, there will no doubt be those for whom my statements of condemnation are not enough. Why associate myself with Reverend Wright in the first place, they may ask? Why not join another church? And I confess that if all that I knew of Reverend Wright were the snippets of those sermons that have run in an endless loop on the television and You Tube, or if Trinity United Church of Christ conformed to the caricatures being peddled by some commentators, there is no doubt that I would react in much the same way
------
(again, look at the first letter of each paragraph. How many times have you heard the term 'bag lady' or 'that old bag'. This is outrageous! Blatant sexism, for sure. But we're not done yet. Here is the worst offending excerpt.)
------
And Ashley said that when she was nine years old, her mother got cancer. And because she had to miss days of work, she was let go and lost her health care. They had to file for bankruptcy, and that’s when Ashley decided that she had to do something to help her mom.
She knew that food was one of their most expensive costs, and so Ashley convinced her mother that what she really liked and really wanted to eat more than anything else was mustard and relish sandwiches. Because that was the cheapest way to eat.
She did this for a year until her mom got better, and she told everyone at the roundtable that the reason she joined our campaign was so that she could help the millions of other children in the country who want and need to help their parents too.
------
(You read it right. ASS! This is a clear sign that, if elected, Barack Obama would take his advice and direction, not from Jeremiah Wright, but from Sir Mix-A-Lot. He likes big butts, and he cannot lie, but OBAMA can. You other brothers can't deny.)
You may think you are flying under the radar, Mr. Obama (if that IS your real name), but I'm on to you. I'll not stop until I expose your filthy, sexist tripe for EVERYONE to see.

Surely it must have been a slip for Maureen Dowd to align the artistry of my late husband, Gene Kelly, with the president’s clumsy performances. To suggest that “George Bush has turned into Gene Kelly” represents not only an implausible transformation but a considerable slight. If Gene were in a grave, he would have turned over in it.
When Gene was compared to the grace and agility of Jack Dempsey, Wayne Gretzky and Willie Mays, he was delighted. But to be linked with a clunker — particularly one he would consider inept and demoralizing — would have sent him reeling.
Graduated with a degree in economics from Pitt, Gene was not only a gifted dancer, director and choreographer, he was also a most civilized man. He spoke multiple languages; wrote poetry; studied history; understood the projections of Adam Smith and John Maynard Keynes. He did the Sunday Times crossword in ink. Exceedingly articulate, Gene often conveyed more through movement than others manage with words.
Sadly, President Bush fails to communicate meaningfully with either. For George Bush to become Gene Kelly would require impossible leaps in creativity, erudition and humility.
