War veterans take to front line of politics

The two war veterans now want to serve their country on a wholly different front.
Carter, 30, and Yashirin, 25, are running for Congress in Nebraska. Both are Democrats who oppose the war and both hope to unseat Republican incumbents who support it.
Carter is running for the seat held by Rep. Lee Terry of Omaha in the 2nd Congressional District, while Yashirin wants to replace Rep. Jeff Fortenberry of Lincoln in the 1st District.
Carter and Yashirin are part of a larger group of returning warriors running for Congress.
The trend of Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans seeking congressional seats began in earnest in 2006. Eight of the 10 veterans who ran were Democrats who opposed the war; four of them won.
