6. I think Wellstone was the first to coin that phrase
Though, Wellstone, as a member of Minnesota's Democratic Farmer Labor party was probably more of a Farmer Laborite - which is where I like to place myself.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farmer-Labor_Party_(United_States)

The Farmer-Labor Party was a political party of Minnesota. It was founded in 1918 and merged with the Minnesota Democratic Party in 1944.

The party had a good deal of success in Minnesota as a statewide third party, with three governors and four U.S. senators serving during the 1920s and 1930s. The party platform called for protection for farmers and labor union members, government ownership of some industries, and social security laws. There were attempts to develop the party into a national Farmer-Labor Party in the early 1920's.

The Minnesota Democratic Party, led by Hubert Humphrey, was able to merge the Farmer-Labor party with the Minnesota Democratic Party in 1944. Since 1944 the two parties together make up the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party.

Minnesota Governors who were Farmer-Labor
Floyd B. Olson (1931-1936)
Hjalmar Petersen (1936-1937)
Elmer Austin Benson (1937-1939)
United States Senators from Minnesota who were Farmer-Labor
Henrik Shipstead (1923-1941) later became a Republican
Magnus Johnson (1923-1925)
Elmer Austin Benson (1935-1937)
Ernest Lundeen (1937-1941)

9. Yaller Dog
From Wikipedia:

In the late 19th century and throughout the 20th century, Yellow Dog Democrats were voters in the U.S. Southern states who consistently voted for Democratic candidates — simply because of lingering resentment against Republicans during the Civil War and Reconstruction periods. The term arose from an apocryphal remark that a Southerner would vote for a yellow dog before he'd vote for a Republican.

I would have said Moderate/Independent up until 2000-2001, since then, I've become more left wing. Hmmm what happened around that time........hmmmmm.....

Edited on Tue Feb-27-07 10:51 PM by flaminbats
people like Ralph Reed, Pat Robertson, Newt Gingrich, and Pat Buchanan were neocons. Neocons don't exist in the Democratic Party any more than neoliberals exist in the Republican Party.

Neocons are essentially former Reagan Democrats or southern conservatives who became Republicans during the last three decades. Neoliberals are people like Jay Rockefeller, Michael Forbes, and Jim Jeffords who began as progressives in the Republican Party.

But most neocons have become Republicans..like Richard Shelby and Sonny Perdue. Neocons believe that the more taxes are cut and the more we spend on government bonds..the more revenue will increase because of a booming economy. Conservatives tend to be supportive of the war in Iraq...but they view taxcuts as something that will only add to the debt while undermining our economy in the long run. Neoliberals tend to agree with conservatives on the need to for higher taxes to pay down the national debt, but they tend to disagree with the war in Iraq. Liberals oppose the war in Iraq, but also agree with the conservatives on reduced regulation along with more liberty for the individual. Liberals also believe programs like Social Security and Medicare result in more stability in the economy while insuring that our tax dollars will ultimately be used for the most moral purpose. And what about the John Dingell wing?

Edited on Wed Feb-28-07 08:13 PM by cgrindley
a strong believer in big government, lots of taxation and lots of regulation. I believe in nationalized health care, nationalized utilities, no private education of any sort, and a firm separation of church and state. I also favor the "nanny state" model and feel safer when I have a kindly vaguely socialist government I can trust to tell me what to do for the good of the majority. I like the constitution.

45. Nicely Put
A regulated society where things were organized for the common good, with exploitation and inequity minimized--and punished--by law. A society where the necessities, from education to medical care, from utilities and resources to food and shelter, are considered as a general whole, based on what was fair, what was sustainable, and what was for the general good; based on morals and balance. "The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little," as FDR put it, during the Second Inaugural 1936, http://www.bartleby.com/124/pres50.html . I am left-wing, feminist, largely Socialist, anti-rich, anti-capitalist except when heavily regulated and heavily taxed, sometimes middle-of-the-road, and want the weak and the vulnerable protected. What the rich work so hard to keep from others, they do not deserve to have themselves.

I heard a congresswoman remind a CNN interviewer that the Dem majority has only been in power for a month and a half. Well that's all well and good but during that time over 150 servicemen and women have died, not to mention the near 1500 Iraqis who have died. They need to do their jobs and stop BSing around.

Rather than just 'how far to the left are you?'.

I consider myself a populist. That's a liberal, of course, but I'm most interested in economic and labor issues.
