March 24, 2008

A week after the grim 5th anniversary of Bush's illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq and we've hit another "official" somber milestone: the "official" U.S. death toll has reached 4,000. That's according to Pentagon public records - the real numbers are likely much higher, especially considering this doesn't reflect the injured troops that died on their way to the field hospital. And it certainly doesn't count the ones that died the following day in that field hospital or died from complications when they returned home. So that's 4,000 Pentagon-certified, on-the-battlefield, non-friendly-fire-or-fragging deaths.

With that in mind, there was a particularly poignant article in today's New York Times, written from the perspective of a teenaged soldier, specialist Jerry Ryen King, a former honor student and high school athlete from Georgia. This is from his personal journal:

After 232 long, desolate, morose, but somewhat days of tranquility into deployment, I’ve decided that I should start writing some of the things I experienced here in Iraq. I have to say that the events that I have encountered here have changed my outlook on life... The most recent mission started out as a 24-36 hour air-assault sniper mission in a known al-Qaida stronghold just north of Baghdad. We landed a few hours before daybreak and as soon as I got off the helicopter my night vision broke, I was surrounded by the sound of artillery rounds, people screaming in Arabic, automatic weapons, and the terrain didn’t look anything like what we were briefed. I knew it was going to be a bad day and a half. . . .

The next day we cleared an area that made me feel as if I were in Vietnam. Honestly, it was one of the scariest times of my life. At one point I was in water up to my waist and heard an AK fire in my direction. But all in all the day was going pretty good, no one was hurt, I got to shoot a few rounds, toss a grenade, and we were walking to where the helicopter was supposed to pick us up. Everything changed in a matter of 15 minutes... About the time I was opening my MRE (meal ready to eat) I heard an explosion. Everyone started running towards the sound of the explosion. Apparently a suicide bomber had blown himself up killing four soldiers from my squadron and injuring another.

Our 36 hour mission turned into another air- assault into a totally different city, the clearing of it, and 5 more days. We did find over 100 RPG’s, IED making materials, insurgents implacing IED’s, artillery rounds, a sniper rifle, and sort of like a terrorist training book and cd’s.
Jerry Ryen King, journal entry, March 7, 2007

Last Sat. I had two of my wisdom teeth pulled. After taking double the prescribe percocot and morphine pills that the doctor gave me for the pain I decided to catch a flight back to my FOB (forward operation base). It was the coolest Blackhawk ride I’ve had, I was absolutely ripped and I talked the pilots into leaving the doors open. We had four more guys die a couple days ago. They hit an IED, it killed everyone in the humvee.. It’s starting to get a little scary. We made it our first six months with just two deaths and that was plenty. But now just in the past two and a half weeks we’ve had nine more guys get killed, and over 50 wounded. I’m just hoping that I can make it the 75 more days or so that we have left of combat operations before we start packing.
Jerry Ryen King, journal entry, April 11, 2007

The Times article continues: "A month later, Specialist King was sitting inside his combat outpost, an abandoned school in Sadah, when suicide bombers exploded two dump trucks just outside the building. The school collapsed, killing Specialist King on April 23, 2007, along with eight other soldiers, and making the blast one of the most lethal for Americans fighting in Iraq."

There are at least 3,999 similar stories out there, and likely several thousand more. More sons and daughters, brothers, sisters, grandparents, children, all killing and dying for this illegal and immoral wa. How many more before we say, collectively, "enough?!"

12. Hi Truthseekers.
 The NewsHour covered the story of a soldier that had to keep going back. His wife said before he left for his last trip, he was having disturbing dreams that he wouldn't be coming home alive. He was right. He left a wife and young daughter.

 And Cheney said Bushwipe hasthe harder job. He doesn't have to get up in the middle of the night to console a crying child asking for her daughter. He doesn't have to wonder who will ealk her down the aisle when she marries, and he doesn't have to worry about money to feed this young family. They infuriate me.

It's good to be in the company of Malloy fans.

I was fortunate enough to see him and Scott Ritter in Phoenix a few weeks ago. They spoke so well together - knowledge of history, especially - I suggested to them both that they do a road show. There were between 300-400 people there, and you could have heard a pin drop. Biggest surprise to me was the room was full of middle-agers like me. Guess the young 'uns were at an Obama rally!

50. Hi ralps & Crook! Sad to say, Furry is nearing the rainbow bridge.
We took her to the vet Saturday. She weighed 5.1 pounds with her sweater on. She was 6.7 pounds 6 weeks ago when her teeth were pulled. There's a hard mass in her upper jaw that the vet said seemed too solid for an infection, but that other than giving her antibiotics, there wasn't anything he could do.

She's declined so rapidly that this morning I really thought she was dead. Mr. catnapper's off today, and he has held her in his arms all day, giving her water with a medicine dropper. She can't move her limbs, and Mr. c keeps rubbing her paws to warm them up. It breaks my heart - here's my former Marine cuddling this tiny creature and trying to soothe her. She's been his special little buddy since Oreo died, and here he is going through it again.

Sorry to be a bummer. We've all been through it recently. I just know you Truthseekers are there to listen.:hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug:

Hi, Truthseekers!
How ya'll doing? We're doing fine - except Dexter B. lost my purple Expo (whiteboard) marker, and it was my favorite color! He seems to think that those big markers are things that need to be put out of their misery. I keep telling him I need them to torture Beloved Daughter in school (we homeschool - and they are useful for Mommy's special diagrams, that bore one to tears). Maybe my kid paid him to get them "lost."
