1 in 10 in Ohio getting Food Stamps
Nearly one in 10 Ohioans now receives food stamps, the highest number in the state's history.

Caseloads have almost doubled just since 2001, with 1.1 million residents now collecting benefits, according to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

Low wages, unemployment and the rising cost of groceries, gasoline and other necessities are to blame for financial hardships facing many Ohio families.

Caseloads have been rising steadily in the past seven years, said Brian Harter, spokesman for the state agency which oversees the food-stamp program.

7. They are ignorant because of the M$M... they aren't getting the whole story
imho and their minister's preach those lies on the pulpit.

Their radio's are all RW talk shows in many area's and their

newspapers are also owned by RWers. They pass on what they

hear and repeat as truth doctrine but Ohio DID go blue in '06.

I think those same people will do the same in Nov. '08.

I hope they do.

3. Only 1 in 10? I guess they don't count children.
:(

It's the same across the country... and many aren't even applying, although they now qualify.

The people who used to donate to food pantries are now standing in line... :(

start the long climb back.

We don't need any more jobs, i can get a dozen jobs at a dozen places on my 2 mile drive to the train station before work. There are jobs at Pet Smart, Walmart, Taco Del Mar, Target, on an on. What we need are good family wage jobs. FAMILY WAGE JOBS.

on edit - none of these jobs pay more than $18,000 a year.

8. None of them PAY anything close to $18K a year!! Are you nutz?
Part -time doesn't get you $18K and a job without health care is not a 'real job'.

Those jobs you mention are dwindling fast and they pay jack shit!!

16. Yeah it does and welcome to DU.
My son is 19, has had the same employment all through high school. He can't find a job in his trade right now. Electrical. No one's hiring, so he's stayed with this PT job since graduation last June and he is still considered PT even though he works FT hours!! He has accrued over 1,000 hours in sick days and vacation time but he can't touch it because they don't consider him full-time. It's total BS! In his employee booklet, they suggest he apply for state insurance, even though they have an employee insurance plan. and he's shut out of any 401K Plan or retirement plan too. These companies are doing as little as possible for "their employee's" by purposefully keeping them at part-time status. But at least he does have an income and he is looking for an apprentice opportunity. With the housing crunch, they're hard to find.

12. They only counted the people who have phones. I bet many of
the poor in Ohio don't have phones anymore - kinda blows a hole in the whole polls thing as far as reaching all demographics.

would be a real shame. The food cards look like credit cards. No one has to know.

Besides, it ISN'T their fault!

(as long as they VOTE to elect Democrats! If they don't this time? All bets are off!)
