constitutional amendment that would allow retroactive laws
http://publicbroadcasting.net/kwmu/news.newsmain?action=article&ARTICLE_ID=1249930§ionID=1">The Senate also endorsed a proposed constitutional amendment that would allow retroactive laws, and allow them to apply to sex offenders.

First, habeas corpus, and now ex post facto. The http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~wwu/psychology/compliance.shtml">shock and awe conservatives will not rest until the United States Constitution is nothing more than toilet paper.

1. Your subject is misleading
It is the Missouri State Senate, not the US Senate.

2. Oh, it's ok then.
No slippery slope or anything.

5. I agree there is a need for outrage
But I think the target is misplaced.

State Governments are notorious for these kinds of laws, but these are usually overturn when it hits the federal level. No conspiracy or slippery slope.

6. So you think there's no risk?
While I agree that it will not likely gain momentum, what if it does and spreads nationwide? It's very possible in this fear driven climate. And the rethugs have nothing to lose since they having nothing else to stand on. I think they would sacrifice the constitution to stay in power if they could.

8. Very unlikely
Ex-Post Facto is a major part of the legal system and protects the Republicans as much as it does everyone else. Many CEO's would go to jail for violation of SOX, etc.

The Supreme Court would toss this one.

9. You're probably right
But if the constitution is amended and the ex post facto clause is stricken, there would be nothing for the SCOTUS to rule on.

It's not so much that I think it will pass, it's more about how outrageous it is to even suggest it, and get state senate support to boot!

Our Founders threw tea parties over less.

14. That's the federal constitution. This is Missouri.
Not very complicated.

16. First one state, then another, then....
Not very complicated.

That's how the http://www.motherjones.com/news/outfront/2002/09/ma_95_01.html">American Legislative Exchange Council does it, which is what the "exchange" means.

The Rethugs have a plan and the Dems sleep right through it.

13. Habeas corpus is a much more fundamental part, and look what happened to it
HC dates back to the Magna Carta in 1215, whereas no post-facto goes back only to 1787.

3. Awesome. I propose a retroactive death penalty for bathroom toe-tapping.
And hiring hookers for diaper fantasies. And paying people to give them blow jobs in the men's room. Etc.

We could seriously thin the Rethug herd with that amendment.

4. What about Foley?
And text messaging and chatting with teens while passing very stiff, heh-heh, laws against it.

15. Sometimes it is difficult to predict what laws you will break in the future.
And, if we are to keep criminals running the country, we need to plan ahead.
