Craigslist Ad Lists Baby For Sale For $1,000

POSTED: 10:31 am EDT March 26, 2008

LEBANON, Ore. --

A Lebanon couple said Tuesday they were the victims of a sick joke after someone used their
name to list a baby for sale, television station KPTV in Portland reported.

An ad on craigslist.org said the baby’s mother wasn’t coming back. It also said the posters
of the ad were out of "tweak," or drugs, and would sell the baby for $1,000.

An e-mail address attached to the ad included the name Birdie Avery. But a woman who shares the
same name in Lebanon said she doesn’t recognize the baby. She said she and her husband don’t own
a computer.

“I don’t know if this is somebody’s really sick April fools joke," she said.

Avery and her husband said they have raised children and grandchildren and would never do such a thing.

"When we find out who did this and who is using my name, I will make sure they get prosecuted to
the fullest extent of the law," Avery said. "This is not funny, it’s malicious and it’s not me."

Avery said she learned of the ad Tuesday afternoon when a detective contacted her.

The couple is working with Salem and Lebanon police to track down the person responsible for the
ad, which has been taken off craigslist.

:wow: Kind of a scary April Fool's joke and a little early too.

1. Just hope that whoever pulled this idiotic stunt realizes
that their IP address will be traced.

7. There are jokes... and then there if fraud
and while I'm not sure of the law, I have a hunch there's something illegal about either fraudulent advertisements or about advertising humans for sale...

3. They probably don't realize that, I'll bet it's a
PO'd relative or a neighbor that doesn't like them.

4. Oregon? Was the post on Oregon's Craigslist?
I'm just asking because last week someone left a post on Oregon's Craigslist saying that the owner of a house was abandoning the house and all its contents, including a horse, and that folks should come pick up whatever they wanted.

Another hoax on Oregon's Craigslist?

5. That would be correct and I hope you reported that other one!
That happened to a CA couple building a house and they were cleaned out!

6. The police were already on it by the time I found out about it
I didn't see the post on CraigsList, just read about it. So no, I wasn't involved in reporting it, I have to admit.
