"From alcoholic bum to most powerful figure in world"...Oliver Stone's "fair, true portrait" of Bush

"It's a behind-the-scenes approach, similar to 'Nixon,' to give a sense of what it's like to be in his skin," Stone told Daily Variety. "But if 'Nixon' was a symphony, this is more like a chamber piece, and not as dark in tone. People have turned my political ideas into a cliche, but that is superficial. I'm a dramatist who is interested in people, and I have empathy for Bush as a human being, much the same as I did for Castro, Nixon, Jim Morrison, Jim Garrison and Alexander the Great."

Stone declined to give his personal opinion of the president.

"I can't give you that, because the filmmaker has to hide in the work," Stone said. "Here, I'm the referee, and I want a fair, true portrait of the man. How did Bush go from an alcoholic bum to the most powerful figure in the world? It's like Frank Capra territory on one hand, but I'll also cover the demons in his private life, his bouts with his dad and his conversion to Christianity, which explains a lot of where he is coming from. It includes his belief that God personally chose him to be president of the United States, and his coming into his own with the stunning, preemptive attack on Iraq. It will contain surprises for Bush supporters and his detractors."

5. why not
I will. How can we, as a people learn how to clean up Bush's crap (and avoid making the same mistakes again) without analyzing where he's coming from?

7. Back in the mid-1960s Esquire did a photo essay of three or four skid-row bums ..
They had the "before" pictures of each. They were your quintessential alcoholic Bowery tatterdemalions sipping Thunderbird, etc., from paper sacks. I think those photos were shot on the streets.

The juxtaposition photo shoot was done in a studio, and the bums were totally cleaned up. They looked, in fact, like wealth suburbanites: sipping white wine, a Martini, or beer from an elegant Pilsner glass, dressed in preppy cloths with spiffy shoes and looking for all the world like they were at a fancy cocktail party in Westchester county. But they still looked like raging alcoholics. Rich raging alcoholics that are acceptable in society. That was the point, I think.

I often think of that issue of Esquire when I see Bu$h, puffy and crapulent. That is what he is, a skid-row bum in the Peoples House .. probably drinking liquor we pay for. Damn, I'd like to have a copy of those photos from Esquire.

11. Stone could make Sponge Bob's biopic look provocative and dramatic...
says more about his craft behind the camera than his crappy choice of subject material.

15. Bush needs the Coen Brothers or Tarantino, not Stone
Stone makes movies about simple characters. Stone thinks Bush is not a symphony but a chamber piece. I disagree. I say with Tarantino as the director, you would get something like the truth. Bush would be played by Javier Bardem.
