So, how's that war and occupation going, Senator McCain? You know, the one you keep referring to as "under control," and "things are improving" and did I hear you mutter something about a "light at the end of a tunnel?" Oops. My bad. That was said about a different war, one that cost over three million US, Vietnamese, Cambodian, and other various and sundry nationalities . . . dead.

But, this one, Senator? This murderous occupation. What's happening lately? What's going on since you made your famous walkabout in Baghdad last year - the one that convinced you all was well, hell, anyone could do it. Anyone, that is, who had the same total ground, air, sniper and missile cover you did at the time, right?

Well, here's an update for you, Senator: A cease fire crucial to recent security improvements in Iraq was today under severe strain after Moqtada al-Sadr called for "civil revolt" following a crackdown on Shia factions in Basra. Iraqi security forces in the southern Iraqi city encountered heavy resistance as battles broke out with gunmen from Sadr's Mahdi Army militia. Officials in Basra said 22 people were killed in the clashes, with a further 58 wounded. Following the clashes, Sadr appeared to threaten to end the ceasefire, which was declared last August.

Want more? Okay: Sadr's followers responded in Baghdad, where Shia gunmen were visible in several neighborhoods. Police told Reuters that Mahdi Army fighters loyal to Sadr were battling gunmen from the Badr Organization, the armed wing of the Supreme Islamic Iraqi Council in Basra. Major-General Ali Zaidan, the commander of Iraqi ground forces in the Basra operation, said its aim was to "wipe out all the outlaws". "There were clashes and many outlaws have been killed," he told Reuters. Television footage showed smoke from explosions rising over the city and Iraqi soldiers exchanging shots with militia fighters. "There are clashes in the streets," a Basra resident told Reuters. "Bullets are coming from everywhere, and we can hear the sound of rocket explosions. This has been going on since dawn."

Same story, different news agency: Iraq's prime minister on Wednesday gave gunmen in the southern oil port of Basra three days to surrender their weapons and renounce violence as clashes between security forces and Shiite militia fighters erupted for a second day. Suspected Shiite extremists also unleashed rockets or mortars against the U.S.-protected Green Zone in central Baghdad for the third day this week. Three Americans were seriously injured in the attacks, U.S. Embassy spokeswoman Mirembe Nantongo said. At least eight Iraqis also were killed after rounds fell short in several areas of Baghdad. At least 55 people have been killed and 300 wounded in Basra and Baghdad after the fighting spread to the capital's main Shiite district of Sadr City, police and hospital officials said. Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki was in Basra to supervise a crackdown against the spiraling violence between militia factions vying for control of the center of the country's vast oil industry located near the Iranian border.

I've missed you guys too! :pals: I don't know how long I can stay tonight, my sister is visiting other family members and I have some time to myself. Everyone's hanging in there. Kristy's in labor - the last I heard she was 1 centimeter dialated. As if this poor kid hasn't been through enough, not only is she in labor - but she has a kidney stone too!

My sister's hanging in there. They did two procedures today - they put in a screen to stop blood clots that have formed in her legs and a chest tube to help get fluid out of her lungs. Her spirits were much better today though knowing the baby's on his way.

I came here because I was trying to find a group of people who are as worried about what really looks to me like the impending war in Iran as I am. Mike seemed to be last night. But I guess maybe it's just too painful to talk about. Mike's worrying about last night's gaff. His mistake, I find much easier to understand than Hillary's failure to remember accurately whether or not she had been exposed to sniper fire.
But then, I think Obams should be standing up for his pastor too. After all, the truth is the truth...even when we wish it would not be what it is.

Bush Rushing To Get Nation In Order Before Hu Jintao's Visit

WASHINGTON, DC—President Bush announced in a hastily arranged press conference Monday that he wanted to make the entire country "as presentable as possible" for visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao, who was scheduled to arrive for a five-day state visit in a matter of hours.

"I knew he was coming, but I didn't realize he was coming today—just look at this place," said a visibly flustered Bush, as he and his Secret Service detail hurriedly picked up trash along Interstate 66 near Arlington, VA. "We got the area around the Mall spotless, but now it just makes the rest of the city look worse. There are homeless people cluttering up our streets—and not just here, but in Denver and San Francisco, too."

"It's humiliating how much we let this place go," Bush added.

Bush said he blocked out all of Saturday afternoon "to get our great nation looking halfway decent" before Hu's visit, but he soon became overwhelmed as he realized how much more needed to be done.
