Sen. Lisa Murkowski introduced legislation, co-sponsored by Sen. Ted Stevens, to open the Arctic Coastal Plain in Alaska to oil development when the price of oil reaches $125 a barrel.

Oil prices are likely to keep rising and are unlikely to slow unless oil development is increased, according to a statement from Murkowski’s office.

Murkowski’s legislation, the American Energy Independence and Security Act of 2008, would automatically open 1.5 million acres of the coastal plain of the 19-million-acre Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil exploration and development if the world price of oil reaches $125 a barrel for five days.

Exploration and development in ANWR would be governed by a series of strict environmental safeguards.

Those prohibit more than 2,000 acres of the refuge from physical disturbance, mandate that .................

2. Notice that Republican policies, under two oilmen in the Executive office, cause

a massive increase in the price of oil (and profits for oil/energy companies), so that suddenly the REPUBLICAN policy of ANWR drilling becomes more palatable to the average American who is held hostage to the increased costs. They get their way twice, don't they?

5. Please tell me how in the hell will opening anwr help.
I'm beginning to think our Alaskan lawmakers are retarded. OK, Let's do this again. If we were to open ANWR it would not make a single bit of difference about the price of oil.
1. Alaska does not set the price of oil. Although we have large fields, they do not produce anything near enough to affect world oil prices. They are full of it when they say it will help at the pump.
2. Even if they started developing them right this very second, by the time they were on line they would already have been outpaced by demand.
3. Even if they did start production the Trans Alaska Pipeline will only flow so much oil. I think is around two million BPD, IF everything is run at max capacity and no problems. The likelihood of this being possible is almost non existent for a 30 year old pipeline and pump stations. Even with recent upgrades.
4. What will keep the oil companies from selling it overseas. NOTHING! They are in this business for the money. They don't give shit if you can't afford to drive your car. They are multi-national corporations. Whether they make their profit in dollars, Yen or Baht is doesn't matter to them.
If you really want to make a difference about the price of gas here is a little advice. BUY A FUEL EFFICIENT CAR!!!!!!!!!

10. It will help someone really rich get a little bit really richer
That's how the Corrupt Bastards Club functions.

It has nothing to do with "helping" other than "helping themselves" to our resources!

6. Lets start with keeping the oil we are already pumping from Alaska
Then we can talk about ANWR. Note I said talk about it, not pass it. Because of course, we know that they won't keep oil pumped in Alaska in the US.

9. They just won't give up...
This is such a short-sighted view. Even if they did open ANWR, the oil wouldn't be on line for at least 10 years and would probably go overseas anyway. This is just stupid. Hopefully Ted will be gone in November.

11. Stevens, Commerce Secretary touts drilling in ANWR
Commerce secretary touts drilling in ANWR
Chris Freiberg - March 26, 2008 - http://newsminer.com/news/2008/mar/26/commerce-secretary-touts-drilling-anwr/

Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez called for more oil exploration in Alaska .... Gutierrez touted drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge as one of the solutions to bringing down the record-high cost of oil. “We know that reliance on foreign oil is one of our most serious national security concerns, and we need to address it,” he said.

As much as 10 billion barrels of oil could be under the refuge, and drilling is supported by the Bush administration and Alaska’s congressional delegation. However, the approval needed for such a project would be difficult to get in Congress, where anti-drilling Democrats hold a majority .........

Sen. Ted Stevens, who is traveling with Gutierrez, said he is confident ANWR legislation could get passed in a session held after November’s presidential election.

“ANWR will occur when the public finally wakes up and demands these people stop just kowtowing to this small group of extreme environmentalists,” he said.
