Why, in your mind, Does DU exist?
Edited on Wed Feb-28-07 03:05 AM by MoseyWalker
It, at times, causes me to become dangerously close to insane, but other times causes me to understand the reasons why I used to think I was able to withstand the world.

So?

edited for a friggin comma

10. It's a contrast to the "Librul media."
Where liberal issues actually get some air and discussion without the pile-driver noise of the freepers disrupting.

11. To get out of freeperland. Most political sites back in
2004 were overrun by manic freepers who called anyone with a slight liberal bent names and constantly shouted. You could not have a decent discussion about any political issue without some idiotic freeper calling names and gloating. DU allowed for real political discussion that was all but banned on other sites.

12. To right a terrible wrong
is why DU exists.
To give us hope.
To remind us there is a better way.
To end the despair of helplessness.
To remind us that we can be agents of change.
To give us a common voice.
To restore the rightful President of The United States-Al Gore.

To fight against corruption and FOR open government and where we can support the Democratic heroes who work to lead those battles.

It has a life of its own because of this fact.

22. It began as a place to get a "sanity check" in a country seemingly gone insane.
Edited on Wed Feb-28-07 11:32 AM by TahitiNut
It was, at the beginning, a place where politically-aware liberals could exchange perspectives and gain some assurance that we weren't hallucinating - that the nation was in thrall to an orchestrated and well-funded disinformation campaign from the extreme right.

It has since become something else, either in addition to or supplanting the above. For some of us, either too cowardly or too indolent to engage in real world struggles and confront bigotry and greed in our communities, it's a place to engage in 'flight deck' vigilantism, attacking those childhood monsters under our comfortable beds, in the persons of safer targets - targets that aren't as scarey as the real thing. For some of us, unable or unwilling to take personal responsibility for our own governance by directly participating in that governance and risking our comforts, safety, and our very lives, it's a place to attack those who do step forward - candidates for office and military personnel, current or former - shifting the blame for our own decades-long indolence and cowardice to handy scapegoats: those who've done more and risked the most.

I'd like to look forward to a time when we're all ready, willing, and even eager to put our own asses on the line - risking life, limb, and liberty to stand up for our own governance instead of "letting George do it." I'd really like to - but I'm not that optimistic.
