1. This is the "theory" espoused by...

...a couple of fringe researchers (Duesberg and Rasnick by name) that AIDS isn't caused by HIV. President Mbeki of South Africa is a huge fan of this theory (probably because it means he doesn't have to spend a large portion of the South African treasury on expensive anti-AIDS drugs), to the extent he blocked the distribution of AIDS drugs in South Africa. The result: lots and lots and lots of dead people. Mbeki was forced to reverse his decision somewhat, but he's still a cheerleader for this baloney, so many people with HIV have been hoodwinked into not seeking treatment.

Here's some stuff to read on the "debate."

If you Google the names of the researchers, you'll see a number of refutations of their conclusions, amidst a sea of New-Age hooey.

2. More blood on Rupert Murdoch's hands
The Sunday Times of London ran a big "scoop" on this some years ago, which gave it undeserved credibility. It's appealing to people whose arithmetic skills are lacking. You look at people who treat the virus, and compare them to people who don't treat the virus, and group A have much lower rates of illness and death than group B.

3. I remember that Times article...

...and it was definitely all about selling the newspapers. The truth came in a very distant second. To be fair, a lot of the "respectable" press has been complicit in promoting Duesberg and Rasnick's snakeoil, by giving it the false credibility of the "controversy" label. There is no more genuine argument about this than there is about the existence of the Tooth Fairy but, every few years, a new generation of "journalists" discover it as if it were written on stone tablets.
