Question for Old Timer DUers
I recall when I first registered at DU shortly after the (s)election of 2004 that there was a period on DU where name changes were allowed by the DU administration. Was there something that prompted that? Is that a periodic routine occurrence at DU? I have never seen that happen since, and I was actually wondering if that had something to do with DU discussion during the primary in 2004, something that I wasn't around to witness nor take part of.

Anyone recall?

Thanks! :hi:

1. I just remember that we were allowed
but the reasoning behind it escapes me. But then, I'm old.

2. A lot of new members had candidate specific names, I think.
They were given the opportunity to go more "generic" or whatever, after the election.

Correct me on this if I'm wrong, guys...

3. That's what I thought, too...
I didn't think there were many that had their names changed.

6. Nope, you've got it
That was exactly the reasoning given for allowing it, and it was to be a one time only window of opportunity. Recently I believe Skinner was asked if it would be done again after this election and his answer amounted to "We'll see", or it's equivalent.

9. That's how I remember it too...
Kerry and Dean type names wouldn't be as meaningful now as they were 4 years ago.

4. eh? speak up!

Yeah, I think it was after the last generals. I didn't pay any attention, since I had a candidate neutral name.

I wouldn't be surprised if it happens again in early 2009.

7. THANKS, OLD TIMER!
(was that loud enough?)

Seriously, though, thank you and I'm sorry for the "Old Timer" thingy -- just trying to get the attention of those of you who were here early on, such as yourself --probably a poor choice of words, lol, but it's been an exhausting week and my mind is numb. :hi: Thanks again.

10. Why, ya thinking about changing your name
:)

But yeah - we had a lot of new people sign up with candidate/issue related names and once it was all shook out the admins that it prudent to allow name changes.

I remember back in my early days on du, we had to post in blinding snowstorms while walking uphill with a gerbil on a wheel to generate power....

11. LOL!
In the olden days... (that's how my kids phrase it, as in, "In the olden days, did you have popcorn?"

And, no, I am not thinking of changing my name - it suits me fine. But, I can imagine, come GE time, there might be a poster or two over in the GD:P
( Excuse the tangential thought here, but I love how "GD: P" = "GD:P" - it's so fitting!) forum who may want to change their name. Maybe not, though.

;) I was just being curious.

Thanks, Old Timer DUer!

12. Well, I ain't that old I spect
42. But a younger wife makes me feel almost as if I were 40 again :)

And why did ya choose Emit? Is it because it is timE backwards? My username is from the movie "The Straight Story" probably the only G rated movie Lynch ever did....

(and hey, start a thread later on how people came up with their user names, is always interesting to know!)
