World Toilet Day
Edited on Sat Mar-29-08 04:50 AM by Mugu
19 November is World Toilet Day. But why, when every day seems to be given a name - be it Cat Day, Cuddle Day or even Doughnut Day - is World Toilet Day important?

Well, for one, the average person spends three years of their life on the loo - so there is plenty of time to think about it! But, while it is easy to laugh about toilets, or rather the lack of them, it is a very serious issue.

Two and a half billion people live without a clean or private place to go to the toilet.

This means that nearly 40% of the world's population have to use fields, streams, rivers, railway lines, canal banks, roadsides, plastic bags, or squalid, foul smelling, disease breeding buckets and unsanitary latrines.

2. Maybe Water Aid should hold a benefit concert to help provide people with toilets.
They could even release a star-studded song and put the profits toward the cause.

I can hear it now: "Wee Are the World."

4. Grew up on the first toilet in the county! My favorite toilet story is
of a friend who put in the first toilet in an entire region
of the Amazon Basin. We floated the new porcelain god from
the airstrip where it landed down the river. There were no
roads yet. It was quite the unusual sight sitting in the canoe.
It was the first time anyone's toilet had gone down river floating above the water.

Of course, there was no plumbing anywhere in the region either.
So, to use the flush toilet, you had to go to the creek to get a big
bucket of water for the tank. When you flushed, the water returned!
The whole operation was undertaken to entertain members of "the fair sex" from far-away cities.

My favorite toilet book is "The Motel of Mysteries."

9. I thought this was going to be a take on turn off lights hour thing
Don't use your toilet for a day or something. Having lived without plumbing, was glad it was in an area where safe outhouse was possible.
