Noam Chomsky: Why Don't We Ask What's Best For the Iraqis? (VIDEO)

Posted by Manila Ryce, The Largest Minority at 6:08 AM on March 28, 2008.

As Chomsky bluntly states, aggressors have no rights. Our occupation is criminal. What Americans want for Iraq is irrelevant.

During this election season we’ve already heard Republicans and Democrats alike discussing the best way for America to save face in Iraq, as if the sake of our ego is of enough importance to defy international law. Obama, Clinton, and McCain will all keep troops in Iraq indefinitely, despite the will of the Iraqi people. That “democracy” we brought them sure isn’t worth a damn when we don’t respect it ourselves. Just as the Palestinians learned when they elected Hamas into power, the will of a people in their own land is only legitimate when it coincides with our imperialistic Western vision for the region.

American politicians are regularly asked what they think the best option is for Iraq. As Chomsky bluntly states, aggressors have no rights. Our occupation is criminal. What Americans want for Iraq is irrelevant.

1. Because That Would Be Tantamount to Confessing War Crimes
That would be recognizing that Iraqis are living human beings with rights that the US is violating on a minute by minute basis.

2. K&R "Either you repeat the same conventional doctrines everybody is saying, or else...
...you say something true, and it will sound like it's from Neptune."

4. "Do what I say or else" is the American way.
"What would -you- like?" is only a potential.

6. The answer is quite simple
We (meaning our fascist government) don't ask about what's best for the Iraqis, because we don't care. It's not about the Iraqis and it never was about the Iraqis. It was always about establishing a foothold in the Middle East as a launching pad for our domination of the world and the imposition of a "Pax Americana," in which we would be the one and only superpower controlling all of the world's resources -- most importantly, oil.

The Iraqis fall into two classes: those who help us in our quest for world domination and those who get in the way. Both groups are expendable. This is why George Bush can giggle when he talks about murdering more innocent Iraqis. He doesn't care. It's just a video game to him. He has learned to pretend to care about American dead and wounded, but he doesn't give a shit about them either.

7. Duh! What a concept...If we had done that in the beginning, perhaps we would not have become
involved in this conflict in the first place.

Too bad not enough people were asking "What would be best for America? back in 1999 and 2003...
Perhaps we might have been coming to the end of 8 years of President Al Gore...What a different world we would be living in.
