I love horse racing. And in my twisted and skewed vision of the world, I think that investing $2 on a particular horse in a race is as good an investment as buying cheap stock. In some ways, horse racing is better regulated and as a result, a safer investment than the markets. Today is a good day for racing around the world. There are Kentucky Derby bound horses running in the Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park today but the race of the day is the 6 million dollar Dubai World Cup:
Dubai World Cup Sponsored by Emirates Airline (Group 1) (G1)
About 1 1/4 Miles | Open | 3 Year Olds And Up Stakes | Purse: $6,000,000
1 1 Sway Yed (KSA) 50-1 2 2 Well Armed 30-1 3 3 Happy Boy (BRZ) 10-1 4 4 Kocab (GB) 30-1 5 5 Great Hunter 50-1 6 6 Premium Tap 15-1 7 7 Vermilion (JPN) 8-1 8 8 Jalil 6-1 9 9 Asiatic Boy (ARG) 8-1 10 10 Lucky Find (SAF) 20-1 11 11 Gloria de Campeao 30-1 12 12 Curlin 3-5 13 13 A. P. Arrow 20-1
A 6 million dollar race and the field includes 2007 Horse of the Year, Curlin. And Curlin won his last prep race over this same course which should negate any concern over his not getting pre-race medication (Lasix). BUT this is some of the best and most expensive horseflesh on the entire globe and a 3-5 shot from an outside post on this course is definitely worth betting against. In fact, this is one of those rare "bridge jumper" opportunities. There will be so much money in the Show pool bet on Curlin that if he finishes 4th or worse, the Show prices paid out will be astronomical. Jalil is my choice today followed by Asiatic Boy and Happy Boy.
