GORE Will Not Only Run - But He Can And WILL WIN in '08
Al Gore Will Not Only Run, but He Can and Will Win in '08

With an Oscar Appearance, and a Hit Documentary Gore Is Suddenly Very Cool

OPINION By ANDY OSTROY
Feb. 27, 2007 — Make no mistake: Former Vice President Al Gore will be our next president.

I am as confident about that assertion as I am that George W. Bush will go down in history as America's worst president ever. Gore is the right man at the right time, for many reasons. And it's clear that the momentum and buzz is shifting his way big time.

.................

I even have the perfect campaign slogan for Gore: "Imagine how it would've been."

Just imagine what the country would be like today had he become president in 2000 and not Bush. Imagine an America without this bloody debacle in Iraq. Imagine an America that commands the respect of its allies and is feared by its enemies. Imagine an America that puts the environment before big corporate interests. Imagine having a president who strives to bridge the gap between rich and poor, where the middle class, not the wealthy, gets the tax breaks, and where the minimum wage is not a shameful $5.15. Pretty powerful stuff on the campaign trail, huh?

They would probably never use a slogan like that, though. Political slogans always look forward.

BUT..... they can rest assured that about 93% of the American public will be thinking that exact thing - over and over. It will be the official thought-bubble slogan!

11. A wet cat can win.
Against the current list of opposing candidates.

In the primary, could Gore take the nod? He would get my vote. He is one of the most talented political figures in the United States. Unfortuantely talent doesnt seem to talk much in the US.

But this year is different. Whoever wins the democratic primary, will be the next president. I would bet my house on it.

28. IF he runs, not sure he will
Don't misunderstand, I hope he does run and I think, assuming a half-decent campaign, he could win but Rove's MO has always been to throw so much poison that the opponant becomes disheartened. Al Franken's most recent book had the story of a judge who won but elected not to run again because of the sheer bastardy of teh Rove campaign against him and how that affected his family. After 2000's smear campaign against Gore, I could understand if he doesn't want to subject himself and his family to that again.

54. This is exactly what I've been thinking.
Who knows better than Al just how grimy an experience running for office is? How hard on one's patience and sapping of one's strength, as well as miserable for one's family.

It's pretty clear that Al has made up his mind firmly never to submit to that horror again, and I imagine that's even if he feels he could win, and then do a lot of good for the U.S. and the world from the White House.

Could it be, however, that as the drumbeat calling for him to step up gets louder and more insistent, and the outlook grows increasingly bright for the outcome, he lies in bed at night during that "twilight" time between waking and sleep, and feels the pull toward accepting the call so many are sending out to him?

I have a feeling he might relent if he is convinced of one thing: that he could do more to preserve the planet in the coming years as our President than as a private citizen.

I'm not starry-eyed about the guy and hope others aren't forgetting his shortcomings in all this fervor for a Gore candidacy. He isn't perfect; and if we forget that, we'll have rude awakening in store.

But he could well be the best of the possible choices out there. I would certainly vote for him! And with far fewer reservations this time than in 2000.

I think Big Al has improved with age and matured very nicely. He could do us all very proud if he really sets his mind to it and his heart is in it!

67. In view of the events of the last six+ years, I think his political capital has risen enormously.
he's the right age, he's got the experience, he's smart, articulate (gosh, did I notice that during the Oscars, how I miss a president with a vocabulary), everybody who voted for him last time will run to do it again, and additionally, people who DIDN'T (like myself) will join them enthusiastically. You will have the 30% of hardcore pukes who won't, but I've even heard pukes saying that they'd entertain the idea of voting for Gore.

Separately, no offense, but I wonder why you are so downright negative about those of us here who want to see him run again. In the past you've indicated that he undoubtedly objects to the "toxicity" of today's political system, but I don't understand what you mean by that. Can you be more specific, or no?

56. Right candidate --- wrong slogan
Edited on Thu Mar-01-07 04:01 AM by Apollo11
"Imagine how it would've been" is backwards-looking.

Gore has said many times that Presidential campaigns should always be about the future.

That's why in 2000 he did not only talk about the achievements of the Clinton-Gore years.

That's why in 2002 he promised not to seek the nomination for 2004. Because he knew that the country would not want a re-run of Bu$h v Gore. The question of "who really won in 2000" would keep coming back and that would prevent a serious discussion about the future direction of the country.

Of course I share the view that Al Gore is the best qualified person for the job, in terms of his experience, knowledge, intelligence and judgement.

As to the question of whether he will run -- I think Al Gore is keeping his options open right now, watching how the "pre-season" goes. I don't think he yet knows what he will do.

There is no hurry for Gore to enter the race for 2008. He is doing a great job raising public awareness about the climate crisis. Winning an Oscar means that even more people will hopefully see "An Inconvenient Truth". Gore will testify at a Congressional Hearing on March 21st.

Gore is also busy working on his next book "The Assault on Reason" - to be published in May. The theme of this book - why we need better decision-making in government - is very timely (whether he runs or not).

Gore is also leading "Live Earth" with concerts in 7 cities across the globe on 7/7/07 -- all with the aim of raising awareness and pushing for action to address the climate crisis.

Depending on how things pan out, and the reaction to his book, Gore can consider his situation over the summer and announce his decision (or if you prefer - "change his mind") sometime in the fall.

Don't forget that Bill Clinton did not kick-off his campaign until October 1991. But Al Gore already has nationwide respect and name recognition that other wannabees can only wish for!

Unless and until Gore endorses another candidate, we have to assume that he is keeping his options open. So it is too soon for those of us who prefer Gore to switch our allegiance.

Let's all find ways to show our support for Al Gore! :patriot:

57. Footnote: Gore v Clinton
I have read the reports about the tensions that existed between Bill, Hillary and Al during the years of the Clinton-Gore Administration. I can believe that Al and Hillary are not the best of friends.

As long as Hillary is strong in the polls, leading the Democratic field and beating any likely Republican candidate, it will be very difficult for Al Gore to jump in. He doesn't want to be put in a position where it's Al and Tipper fighting against Hillary and Bill. It would not look good. The media would portray it as a major split at the heart of the the Democratic Party.

However, if the race for the Democratic nomination remains wide open, with Obama and others remaining competitive, this will make it easier for Al Gore to enter the race. Similarly, if national polls are showing that Giuliani for example might win against Hillary, that would also create an opening for Al Gore to jump in at some point during the fall.

There is also another factor that Al Gore will take into consideration. It looks like Hillary has a realistic chance to become the first woman President. Al Gore believes in diversity. Don't forget he picked a "minority" running mate back in 2000 (whatever we think about Lieberman). I'm not sure that Al Gore would want to be remembered as the guy who stopped America electing its first woman President.

It all depends how things are looking in September and October. If Hillary's campaign is in real trouble, then it's quite possible that Al Gore might jump in and save the day. If he announces on Sunday November 4th (exactly one year before election day) he still has 10 weeks before the Iowa caucuses.

63. "Are you Running for President, Mr Gore?" the question can't be answered yet.
The problem in answering that question, is that it is impossible to state intent, without it immediately becoming what he does; Who he is for the next two years.

Attention from The Nobel Nomination, and his continuing educational march, require him to focus on the issue.

The moment Al announces, he becomes a politician, not a populist. And it is in that sense that Al is not "Running". He has some things to do first.

In the meantime, Al is not running.

At lease not as a noun: run·ning - noun 1. the act of a person, animal, or thing that runs.

64. The Once and Future...President. It touches our deepest yearnings,
and so, for both conscious and sub-conscious reasons, we the people just might make this stuff of eternal myth into a reality, 45 years after "Camelot" died.
