5. Nah, I'm a woman

2. Sweetest Day
Valentine's day was created by the greeting card companies, but one wasn't enough for them...they had to have a second "romantic" greeting-card holiday.

3. Brazil Day which happens on...
Donald Rumsfeld is giving the president his daily briefing. He concludes by saying: "Yesterday, 3 Brazilian soldiers were killed."

"OH NO!" the President exclaims. "That's terrible!"

His staff sits stunned at this display of emotion, nervously watching as the President sits, head in hands.

Finally, the President looks up and asks, "How many is a brazillion?"

6. I'm going to go out on a limb here. . .
But I increasingly dislike most holidays. Not because I don't think we should have a time to celebrate certain events, but because of the way they are packaged in this society. There are few things which annoy me more than how the "family" holidays are treated - and how we are taught to "feel sorry" for those who aren't "married," have a boyfriend/girlfriend, or are either estranged from "family" members or without any to spend time. The saturation on the television of the ideal holiday, the crazy way retail uses the holidays to push sales, the encouragement of people by society to set certain expectations for those holidays just feeds frustrations.

If we could feel like holidays could be celebrated without turning them into duty-days for the retail industry, or feeling forced to spend FFT (forced family time) with people who enjoy making life miserable for others, they might be more magical.

I can remember when, as a gay guy in a committed relationship, I was EXPECTED by people in "REAL" families to willingly give up MY holidays to work at a utility so they could spend the day with THEIR families. I was willing to do that the first couple of years. . .since I had no small children and know how important those memories are for people on Christmas, etc. . .but when that willingness to volunteer became an expectation, I grew to resent them. Particularly when one of them would flat-out TELL me that it was my "duty" to "support families" by giving up MY holiday for THEM - the more perfect ideal. I've never forgotten how that was used on legally "single" people.

"Yes? Can I help you?"
"Trick or Treat. I'm here to extort food from you."
"But it's April 1st."
"Just kidding. I'm here to deliver a valentine."
