Viggo Mortensen Explains Why We Must Demand Accountability
One of the worst things I think that has happened in the last thirty years
is president Ford pardoning President Nixon
because those same people that were working for Nixon
that was a signal to them that yeah you can commit big crimes
and you can get away with it and they you can go right back to work some years later
and that's what happened.
It's not only a bad message to the rest of the world
It's a terrible message to those people who are ill inclined in our own country
because it will keep happening again and again.
There are people in this administration now
not the ole grizzled greedy hacks leftover from Nixon's time
but younger versions of them that are in there now.
It's like teaching a kid the wrong thing.
It is like saying "yeah it's alright
You can lie, you can steal, you can cheat, you can kill"
It's okay. If you do it really big, it's really okay and you can get rich doing it.
It's just a bad thing all the way around.
That's the thing I feel the strongest about
Impeach, remove, Jail

1. And some say that that's the very reason why congress DOES NOT
"impeach, remove and jail" the BushCo criminals. They want their chance to get away with the same kinds of crimes. They don't want accountability in Washington, period. It's like the poor standing up for the "rights" of the uber rich; they believe that someday it'll be their "turn" and they , too, will be billionaires who won't want to pay a dime in taxes. It's a special kind of delusion that Nancy and the rest cling to.

2. I think you are right...and that is very sad
But we the people better DEMAND they do something, or throw them out of office. If not, we are screwed.

4. It's not often we have celebrities
speaking coherently on important issues. I am impressed by his statement because it shows political awareness over the course of time.

5. Bush2, 9-11, and this Iraq war would NEVER have happened if BCCI crimes of BushInc
Edited on Wed Apr-02-08 11:21 AM by blm
and his powerful cronies like Jackson Stephens, Dubai - Saudi royals, AQ Khan and operatives like Marc Rich and James Bath were held accountable in the 90s instead of protected by the Dem administration we all voted for with expectations he'd finally cooperate with the investigations long stonewalled by the previous Republican ones.

What a sick joke that turned out to be - the criminals were protected and the few Dem heros who worked for years to expose BushInc' operations were ostracized by Dem powerstructure.

8. Worse than Rich pardon was the protection of GHWBush and Jackson Stephens
and the Dubai and Saudi royals who have been lining the Clintons bank account by the millions in recent years.

No one involved with protecting GHWBush ends up suffering financially, do they?

10. Gangster mentality
at least 2 generations worth.

When you run a government like a criminal enterprise and lots of people make a lot of easy money, it breeds bad habits.

What a great lesson for the young people in power to learn.

19. He is so right.
Not only was Nixon pardoned, which was inexcusable and NOT done so the people and the country wouldn't have to go through the "misery" of impeachment and the embarrassment of having a president imprisoned like several of his henchmen were, but the bastard was even remade by the media and others into some sort of almost-hero after he left. Remember how he was honored and looked up to as some sort of "elder statesman" in his later years?

Remember how his funeral went and how many of the former presidents attended and looked so solemn and respectful? Made me want to puke.

I think younger types looked at all that and figured American government was a prime place to get plenty rich at the expense of the citizens of this country and never have to answer for your evil deeds or outright crimes. We no longer have public servants in this country, we have self servants who feed at the public trough and who don't give a flying fuck about the citizenry.

The Clintons learned those lessons well and managed to wangle their way into the "new royalty" line. Look who's now best buds with GHWB. It's all a big f'ing scam and a rip-off of regular Americans who still want to believe their leaders are genuine and "good." We're so willing to believe that the worst is not really true -- but it IS true.

This government isn't run LIKE a criminal enterprise -- it IS a criminal enterprise from start to finish now. Just like the Saudi royals know they are untouchable, we now have our own version of "royalty" aka the Bushes and Clintons, and they know they can do whatever they want and get away with it. They didn't call Bill "Slick Willie" for nothing.

I lost complete faith in my government during his administration.

Then the wealthy "modern royals" of America figured out how to steal elections with their infernal machines, and it was all over but the shouting. We're still shouting, but no one is listening. I've given up. We're "royally" screwed, well and for good.

No one in Washington -- or damn few, and they've been ostracized and condemned by "their own" -- is willing to stand up for the people anymore. No one wants to rock their precious, money-making boat or see any of their "brethren" imprisoned because they know almost ALL of them are committing crimes and doing great harm to the nation and its people.

Viggo always did have a good mind inside that pretty head of his. I'm not surprised that he's got the guts to speak the truth as well.
