International court names first suspects to be accused of war crimes in Darfur

Prosecutors at the International Criminal Court yesterday named the first suspects to face charges over their alleged role in the fighting and humanitarian crisis in Darfur.

Ahmad Muhammad Harun, Sudan's secretary of state for humanitarian affairs, and Ali Kushayb, a commander of the notorious "Janjaweed" militia, are the first two targets of prosecutors at the court in The Hague.

The pair "bear criminal responsibility in relation to 51 counts of alleged crimes against humanity and war crimes", said Luis Moreno-Ocampo, the chief prosecutor, in written evidence handed to the ICC's three trial judges.
