The Final Jeopardy question was something like: "he was the most recent sitting Vice-President to be elected President". The winning answer was "George H. Bush" (he was elected President while serving as Vice-President to Reagan). But one of the contestants answered "Al Gore". He had to be making a political statement. There's no way someone smart enough to get on Jeopardy would believe Al Gore had ever actually served as President.
It's hard to believe that a contestant would sacrifice a shot at winning to make a political statement, but frequently the outcome of a Jeopardy game is already decided before the final round.
9. To be honest I was only half watching so I can't say.

I was at a relative's house and it was on but I hadn't really been paying attention to the contestants' placings. I'm assuming that he was secure and didn't need to win FJ.
As I recall they were all within striking distance of each other. This principled man bet all but a dollar and lost. (To be fair, I didn't think of GHWB, probably my psyche trying to blot him out.)
It reminds me of the time my brother had a stroke. They asked him the usual questions to see if he was oriented. When they asked him who was President, he said, "Al Gore."
The nurses decided that he was alert and oriented.
