Today I was going 80 mph in the left lane Interstate 80 westbound
I'm cruisin, listenin to NPR, passing cars and trucks with ease.

Suddenly, a car appears quickly approaching from the rear.

The dude had to be going 100 mph!

So I put on my right blinker and I moved over.

The dude flew by me.

I then put my left blinker on and got back in to the passing lane.

I continued on my commute, passing cars and trucks with ease.

It is terrifying at times because I-285 is 6 or more lanes wide. :scared:

34. A few years back CNN had a story on a Ga. State Patrolman lecturing a driver ed class.
I saw it with my own eyes. The state patrolman told the Atlanta high school students that they must drive the prevailing speed on I-285, or risk life and limb. That speed, said the cop, was normally about 80 mph.

I have started detouring through Athens when I drive from Greenville, SC, to Griffin, GA, to see my elderly parents. I absolutely hate I-285 and I-75-S!

50. Getting onto I-285 from I-75 southbound is absolutely terrifying and I've been doing it since 1981.
I frequently travel back and forth from Chattanooga to NE GA to see my family and friends.

I'll go out of my way to avoid going through Atlanta unless it's between 11PM and 5AM.

Also, merging onto I-85 North from I-285 is really dangerous too. :scared:

15. Karma's a bitch
Someday, that driver's aggressive driving will catch up with him.

Just this weekend, I witnessed an accident where a driver ran through a red light and got T-boned on her passenger side. Thank god nobody was sitting in that seat. However,if the driver who had the green light had been going just a little faster, of if she hadn't hit her brakes, she might have been the one T-boned, with much worse results.

47. Exactly.
I'll set the cruise at 8 or 9 over the limit. Pass anyone thats going slower if the limit is the same, and I'll let the faster drivers continue on. Now if 75% of the drivers around are going faster, I'll speed up to keep with the pace rather than block traffic behind me. But one thing that makes my blood boil is those nitwits riding in the left lane along another vehicle in the right lane **gah, fucker!**.

I think people here in northeastern NC are sanessed drivers around, I rarely ever, EVER see someone going faster than 10 over. And the funny things is, we have a bypass that stretches for about 10 miles with a speed limit of 70mph, most drivers hardly go anymore than 75, but that doesn't keep me from setting my cruise at 78mph:D Now, Hampton Roads VA, that area is full of a-hole drivers!

25. Good, but if it was the autobahn, they usually come up behind you @ 150 mph+
So, you have to keep your eyes in the rear view mirror all the time, if you are in the left lane. When you see a dot in the rear view mirror, you have to turn on your signal ASAP and start to move over ASAP, because by the time you look in the rear view mirror again, the car has passed you.

I drive anywhere from 120 to 150 mph on the autobahn, but I have been passed by Porsches going MUCH MUCH faster.

It was my impression that LANE ETIQUETTE was very important on the Autobahn, and that NO ONE drives in the left lane unless it's to pass another vehicle. Am I wrong?

30. No, you are absolutely correct. I assumed the OP was just passing other cars via the left lane,
then IMMEDIATLY moving back into the right lane, where everyone should always be while cruising.

Sitting in the left lane is such a no-no in Germany other drivers will call the police, and the offender will certainly receive a ticket within a few minutes, since remaining in the left lane is VERY DEADLY on the autobahn.

Passing on the right is also considered reckless and is taken seriously.

59. It's hard to keep that up when there's a different speed limit
for cars and trucks. If there are only two lanes, one is moving at 80 with occasional speeders and the other is moving at 60 with occasional slowdowns to 40 or so. (I'm assuming the OP is on the 80 in California.)

31. Suppose the right lane was full of drivers going slower than you are, you have to put on your breaks
and slow down. Now suppose when you want to go back into the left lane cars are passing you and will not let you in? That's what it is like on the 101 going to Santa Barbara in the morning. If you pull over to let the ass hole going 100 by you will get stuck in the slow lane for a long long time. Usually there are trucks slowing things down there. In that case I say fuck you ass hole and keep driving keeping up with traffic in the left lane.

in heavy traffic.

I'm kinda a slow and steady guy. I would much rather go slow then run the risk of being passed on the right & sideswiped.

Today I had a better car then I normally drive and was just enjoying the ride.

peace and low stress:hi:

ps- you can only go as fast as the car in front of you. If your in the left lane and behind drivers, well, that is all you can do. I just hate "the weavers"...

45. I have been driving on the highway
quite frequently as my mom is an hour away and I go at least once a week to see her. Idaho highways are in bad shape these days. The right lane is rutted deeply and drags your wheels around. Trucks can only go 65 and they tend to stay in the right lane. Cars and pickups are allowed to go 75. That makes for a lot of pulling in and out and passing. I set my cruise control at 79 and try to stay in the left lane. I regularly have monster 4X4 pickup trucks breathing down my ass. I get into the right lane and let them by. That is unless I'm going to be trapped between semi's going 65. I'll go 80 but I don't feel like I have to get a speeding ticket because some aggressive macho freakazoid has to be ahead of me or his bull balls will fall off the back of his truck. If they start riding my bumper and I'm going 80, God forgive me, I've made them pass me on the right. I hate being tailgated but I'm not that much of a nut that I let it get to me all the time. I try to keep myself in check. I'm aware of how easy it would be to allow road rage to take over or to incite some gun nut to try and shoot me.

I drive about 80 every day and I find it to be quite non-chalant, easy, safe and uneventful.

Sure, there are some really scaredy cat, two hands on the wheel, probably shouldn't even be on the highway type drivers I've seen that I most definitely wouldn't recommend that speed to, but for most of us it's perfectly fine.

Maybe it's a challenge for you to drive that speed. Maybe the world goes by too quick for your mind to process the information quickly enough or something, or maybe you're just too scared etc. I dunno. What I do know, is that whatever your limitations are that make that speed that terrifying for you, are yours alone. Those of us without such issues who can drive competently, have no problem at all approaching 80. That's just flat out truth.
