1. I live near there and I love listening to people try to pronounce it
when they aren't familiar with it. She really flubbed it though - many different ways...

7. Now you've done it...
Forced me to repeat my favorite Oconomowoc Joke (Full Disclosure: It's the only Oconomowoc Joke I know)

So these two FIBS (Fucking Illinois Bastards -- it's a term of endearment up here) are driving down the interstate and they see the exit for Oconomowoc up ahead. They're wondering how it's pronounced, and since it's lunch time, they decide to get off and find something to eat. They find a burger place right off the exit ramp and they go in.

"Can I help you?" the girl behind the counter asks.

"Sure," says on of the FIBS, "But before you take my order, can you tell me where we are? And say it really slowly so I can understand it."

"All right," says the girl. "B-u-u-r-r-g-g-e-e-r-r K-i-i-n-n-g."

8. Native American names are typically the hardest for newscasters.
We have tons of names around here (Pacific NW) that newscasters flub. Willamette, Yakima, Puyallup, Steilacoom. The latter 2 get messed up even by locals, but I was surprised to hear a newscaster say Willamette wrong on national TV.

But they call Washington "Washington State". I have often wished WA was renamed something Native American, instead of having to be distinguished from DC.

9. How about Green Bay?
We can always tell someone is not a local when they pronounce it Green' Bay with the emphasis on the Green. Everybody knows it is Green Bay' with the emphasis on the Bay.

And then there is Weyauwega.

The native Americans did it on purpose just to see us butcher the names.

10. We have the same thing here with Ohio and Ohia, an old adage ,
you know you're a native if you can pronounce: Bucyrus, Ashtabula, Coshocton etc, etc.
