Packer outsources Northwest pickles, local cuke growers snap

A Nalley pickle jar says "great taste of the Northwest" on the front label and "product of India" on the back.

Nalley is owned by Bay Valley Foods of Green Bay, Wis., which is closing a processing plant in Portland.

Without the plant, the company says it no longer needs cucumbers from the Skagit Valley and Oregon. Bay Valley, which also produces, Farman's and Steinfeld's pickles is a division of TreeHouse Foods.

2. Won't be buying their product anymore then.
There is no way they can guarantee that the food products are safe.

6. what?????????????????????
Outrageous!!

They'd better not outsource Steinfeld's.

So it's not just the labor that's outsourced. Now they are using produce from the laborers' locale.

I can't stand it.

10. How much has the price come down?
Some nice super-profits they're making off Indian farm labor & indian factory workers.

11. I just checked those out this evening- same price as always
and the same pictures of NorthWest Cascades on some of them. The fine print does show "product of India" -and they're still full of unnecessary additives like Yellow #5 and Polysorbate 80.

(which is why I never bought that brand in the first place. Want to color them, use a little tumeric, geniuses.

If you're into decent pickles and are on a budget, Trader Joes has much larger bottles, sans the additives, for a cheaper price- albeit they're Canadian.

14. Thanks for the suggestion.
I've never tried Trader Joe's pickles. I'll take Canadian pickles over Indian ones.

12. Let me get this straight:
it's cheaper to import pickles from India than it is to grow and process them in the US? You'd think the shipping alone would be enough to fuck that up!
