it is inconceivable to me that our congress sits idly by while we are informed that our president and his lawyers instructed our soldiers to torture suspected enemies.....in violation of all law.

unfuckingbelievable

3. The press doesn't cover the story. Those in congress who make noise are

ignored. They like to discuss Rev. Wright or Randi Rhodes or Hillary's sniper fire but torture and the moral and international implications don't matter.

The other factor is there are not enough in congress who care about the issue. They need pressure from us.

4. Because their constituents back home don't care.
Here at DU, we are dedicated liberals. We have a different world outlook than many if not most of Congress's constituents. They have been so freaked out with all the "terra" scares that they are willing to support torture if it'll save them and their families. They truly believe it.

Joe Biden has tried to make the argument that when we torture, we are only hurting our own service people. But I don't see the people buying it.

I wish you and I could change that, but at this point I doubt if we can...

7. You are right. But a lot of people don't think of torture in terms of
constitutionality. You know, the old "the Constitution is not a suicide pact" argument.

Have you ever talked to coworkers or acquaintances (not definably DU types)about this issue? If you do I think you'll find that their bottom line is safety at any cost. But I hope I'm wrong.

Let me know if you have such conversations. I'd be interested in knowing what they say.

In the meantime, of course we must continue our opposition to torture in the strongest possible terms.

6. Exactly! We need to put pressure on them. But, again some in congress do
make noise but not enough.
