Glenn Beck Rants Against Polar Bears: ‘They Eat People! ... They’re Big, Angry Bears'

I bet he was more likeable when he was on drugs.

from ThinkProgress:

Beck Rants Against Polar Bears: ‘They Eat People! For The Love Of Pete, They’re Big, Angry Bears!’»

Last night on his CNN Headline News show, right-wing pundit Glenn Beck hosted global warming skeptic Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK). Beck allowed Inhofe to rant about how — with “all the liberals” running the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works — he was forced to sit through hearings on “that nice white fuzzy polar bear.”

Inhofe argued that the polar bear population isn’t endangered. “If anything, it’s an overpopulation problem,” said Inhofe. Beck then jumped in and claimed that, in fact, the extinction of polar bears may be a good thing:

They eat people! For the love of Pete, they’re big, angry bears. They eat people. Not that I say we go out and kill all of them, but I mean, it doesn’t seem to be a problem here. Senator, I can’t take the — I can’t take the lies anymore.

There is currently an estimated 20,000-25,000 polar bears worldwide who are threatened with “losing their habitat and becoming extinct over the next 50 years” because of global warming and melting sea ice. The U.S. Geological Survey predicts that without action, “11 of the 19 subpopulations will be extinct by the middle of this century, with an additional three subpopulations vanishing shortly thereafter.”

On Wednesday, Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne skipped a Senate hearing on listing the polar bear as a threatened species. His agency missed a Jan. 9 deadline to decide on classifying the polar bear, in violation of the Endangered Species Act, according to Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA). ..............(more)

2. Beck never disappoints ...
The minute you think he's said the dumbest thing humanly possible, he manages to top it with something even dumber.

4. This is a guy with no life.
If you have to start pointing out that bears are bears, it means you don't have much going on.

6. Shows his assumptions about environmentalists
The comment shows his assumption that people who support protections for the Polar Bears environment, think they are cuddly creatures. It probably never occured to him that we could both know that they will eat you and still think they should be given protections.

7. Yeah, like we want legal protection for Glenn Beck's first amendment rights
even though he's a loose cannon and completely disgusting. It's the big picture, not the specific case. But Beck only has one working brain cell and it's dedicated to making him regular everyday.

5. Let Me Guess: He Opposes Consideration for Polar Bears
Edited on Fri Apr-04-08 12:54 PM by fascisthunter
due to the prospect of oil being found in their natural habitats, and needs to now demonize this animal because it poses a thorn in big oil's backside. These right wing pundits make me sick. They will say and do anything for their masters, and it's all for greed.

11. That idiot and his 'guest', Inhofe can't help but spew lies and more lies.
"In fact, the polar bears in Western Hudson Bay, the southern-most population and the best studied in the world, have shown a substantial decrease in numbers in the last few years. A recent scientific communication presented by the USFWS at the U.S. Marine Mammal Commission's annual meeting in Anchorage in October, noted a drop from about 1,200 to 1,000 bears."

13. I have to add this old Inuit saying ... just for Glenn.
Edited on Fri Apr-04-08 01:25 PM by sinkingfeeling
Attacks on humans by polar bears seldom occur, and human fatalities are rare. For example, the death in 1999 of a Baker Lake, Nunavut, woman following an attack by a polar bear was the first in 25 years. Nearly all such encounters involve a starving bear or a bear that was provoked to attack.

Visitors to the Arctic should heed the advice of Inuit elders, who believe that polar bears can hear a person's thoughts. "Don't think ill of the bears," they warn, "for that might make them angry."

http://www.polarbearsinternational.org/bear-facts/other-human-interactions/

So watch out, Beck and Inhofe, they're coming for you!

12. Polar Bears eat people?
I worked in the arctic for 14 years and have seen polar bears in the wild and never seen one eating people. There was an incident when someone was mauled by a polar bear, but to be honest, the dumb ass was drunk and antagonizing the bear. I don't think being drunk and stupid should be held against the bear though, try doing that at your local watering hole with a guy three times your size and see how well you fare.

14. at this point, it's probably a pretty safe bet that polar bears aren't going to make it as a species
perhaps the grizzly-polar bear hybrids will emerge as the new ursine powerhouse of what will become what was once the frozen arctic tundra..
