The U.S. establishment media in a nutshell

http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/2008/04/05/media/index.html

................

In the past two weeks, the following events transpired. A Department of Justice memo, authored by John Yoo, was released which authorized torture and presidential lawbreaking. It was revealed that the Bush administration declared the Fourth Amendment of the Bill of Rights to be inapplicable to "domestic military operations" within the U.S. The U.S. Attorney General appears to have fabricated a key event leading to the 9/11 attacks and made patently false statements about surveillance laws and related lawsuits. Barack Obama went bowling in Pennsylvania and had a low score.

Here are the number of times, according to NEXIS, that various topics have been mentioned in the media over the past thirty days:

"Yoo and torture" - 102

"Mukasey and 9/11" -- 73

"Yoo and Fourth Amendment" -- 16

"Obama and bowling" -- 1,043

"Obama and Wright" -- More than 3,000 (too many to be counted)

"Obama and patriotism" - 1,607

"Clinton and Lewinsky" -- 1,079

And as Eric Boehlert documents, even Iraq -- that little five-year U.S. occupation with no end in sight -- has been virtually written out of the media narrative in favor of mindless, stupid, vapid chatter of the type referenced above. "The Clintons are Rich!!!!" will undoubtedly soon be at the top of this heap within a matter of a day or two.

2. The corporate media does not want Americans to know the truth
of what their cronies in the corrupt Bush-republicon homelander Administration are doing to desecrate all that is legal, moral, good and just in America. I find the corporate media complicit in all these crimes...Thank you, kpete, for posting these sad stats.

4. Yet there are a lot of DUers who still swear by CNN, MSNBC and even Faux.
Until a majority of the public rejects the lies the corporate media whores are feeding them and turn the crap off for good, NOTHING will change. :argh:

p.s. I've said this before and people come back at me and say they need to know what the other side is saying. Bullshit to that. Either YOU are the change you want to see or not.

8. important point there
I think you make a very important point, TheGoldenRule.

Here is the problem with watching MSM "to know what the other side is saying." The main propaganda on MSM is for the purpose of giving liberals and Democrats a very false and distorted view of what "the other side" is doing as well as a false view of the general public - more so than the propaganda is designed to preach to the right wing choir.

The more TV people watch, the more likely they are to think that half of the population fits a particular stereotype and is unreachable and opposed to the left, and this contributes to the widening communication gap between the intellectuals and activists of the left and the rest of the working class.

6. That's why you, and we, are here KPete!

It's you and a select few others here that make sure these stories are broadcast to the DU community. It's also why people are giving up, in droves, on the Republican corporate media. They have proven themselves complicit in their support of Republican politics. In taking sides, they've abandoned their role of informing the American people. They are toast.

7. The media won't cover what the politicians won't talk about
If we want those memos to get attention, we need to be calling our representatives and raising hell.

9. And yet I still hear and read the media referred to as "MAINSTREAM" ! Get it right people, it's..

CORPORATE MEDIA

Not MSM, not Mainstream Media. There is NOTHING mainstream about it. It is a corporate propaganda tool.

If we expect the corporations to tell the truth, we're in for much disappointment.
