Who is the U.S. most trusted ally in Africa?
Edited on Sun Apr-06-08 08:47 PM by quadriga
Historically? Militarily? Economically? I can only come up with South Africa, but I don't think we are that close, any other countries? AFRICOM has got me thinking of this, I don't even think the new command will be based on the continent.

1. Egypt? Or is that not "african enough" for you?

5. That's actually a good question

People like to treat the entire continent as a monolith, but you might as well be in different planets once you cross the Sahel.

It probably is Egypt, at least as far as a quick answer goes, but there's a whole lot of Africa in Africa and I'm not sure it's a useful idea to treat the continent as a unit instead of two or (more likely) more.

7. AFRICOM treats the continent that way.
Except for the one country you mention, Egypt, which is in CENTCOM

3. They just had a horrible civil war.
I don't even know who is in charge there anymore. Is it still Taylor?

4. he's in prison now
I was going to say Liberia since it was founded by slaves, but I honestly have no idea.

I doubt Egypt since they used to cause problems for Israel and LBJ tried to trick the nation into a war against them by sinking the USS Liberty.

I don't know. I barely know 25 countries in the region.
