(To Me)...This is one of the most depressing songs ever written. (IGY)
This tune was written by Donald Fagen (Steely Dan) to "Celebrate" the International Geophysical Year.
Donald wrote it rather "Tongue in cheek"
He knew damn well that the Bright Future would be the Same old Crap.....

For myself..I find the words:"A just machine to make big decisions
Programmed by fellows with compassion and vision"

Yeah Right..... :(

I.G.Y. (International Geophysical Year)
Donald Fagen

Standing tough under stars and stripes
We can tell
This dream's in sight
You've got to admit it
At this point in time that it's clear
The future looks bright
On that train all graphite and glitter
Undersea by rail
Ninety minutes from New York to Paris
Well by seventy-six we'll be A.O.K.

What a beautiful world this will be
What a glorious time to be free

Get your ticket to that wheel in space
While there's time
The fix is in
You'll be a witness to that game of chance in the sky
You know we've go to win
Here at home we'll play in the city
Powered by the sun
Perfect weather for a streamlined world
There'll be spandex jackets one for everyone

What a beautiful world this'll be
What a glorious time to be free

On that train all graphite and glitter
Undersea by rail
Ninety minutes from New York to Paris
(More leisure for artists everywhere)
A just machine to make big decisions
Programmed by fellows with compassion and vision
We'll be clean when their work is done
We'll be eternally free yes and eternally young

1. This
Swallow these lies
Y'all keep swallowin'
Swatt em like flies now
Keep followin'
Sheep to lead
Ethos of greed's grim
He's smirkin', see?
Hateful screed for new century
Be enslaved
Shoes are too large
Y'all ain't fillin' em
Cook up some wars
Y'all keep killin' em
Travesty as usual

He's your peace
He's your state of mind
Graven image to idolize
Based on cold ideology
Face of lies and hypocrisy
Preacher's blood soaked diamond mines {obscure Ashcroft reference}
Robot judge who will undermine
Travesty as usual

2. I know this will be heresy to some, but ...
To me the most depressing song is John Lennon's Imagine.

Just the instrumentals of the canonical recording is music to cut your throat by, and the lyrics don't help.
