Good God...
So many frightening and depressing stories, it's like a slow motion car crash!

Airplanes with cheap or bogus parts installed by unqualified persons in Mexico and China.
How long before a plane falls out of the sky loaded with people because of it?

Women in Florida may have to suffer even more indignities if they choose to have an abortion if they were raped. Shit, I'm moving there in two weeks!

Pictures of the 9th ward that are just HEARTBREAKING!
American indifference that is infuriating!

Naomi Klein telling us that as she crosses the country people are scared to speak out because they may wind up on "some list" or lose their jobs, or worse have their children harassed.

Cheney to get secret service protection long after he's out of office.

And the day to day Clinton/Obama pissing match on DU getting worse.

McCain/Rice ticket looked upon favorably by New Yorkers (bullshit, I say).

The squeeze is on the middle class.

You know, I think I understand now why people lose themselves in television and other mindless pursuits.

I weep for my country and frankly, I'm scared shitless.

What has become of us?

1. Pretty scary, isn't it?
The sad thing is, the government is so corrupt and there are so many people with their hands in the cooky jar, you and I will be paying for their folly for like forever!!!

I can't imagine this government (which has always had a shadowy side to it) got so much worse in such a short time. I don't expect to live long enough to see it restored to its former self. Doesn't get much sadder than that!

Second verse, same as the first.

Do you feel better now?

Yikes! Me neither!!! I don't even have a job ... I may be even more scared than you!

6. I think part of it is that folks were lost in mindless pursuits to begin with,
and let it all slip through their fingers.

Even with mindless pursuits, it's important to be a "grown up" and pay attention as well.

Maybe people will come back to face that fact because of the BushCo era.

8. DU is big on bad news...
check your local paper or TV news for some good stuff in your neighborhood.

Nationally, yeah, there's a lot of bad stuff, but McCain probably won't win, the economy probably won't crash and burn even though we'll be hurting for a while, no asteroid is know to be hurtling on its way here, and there are still Americans happily creating great food, music, art, furniture, and all sorts of other good things. Even global warming isn't going to kill us off for a while, although our grandkids might not be too happy with what we left them.

Now, if "Pushing Daisies" comes back on the air, it will be a fairly decent world after all.

Love that show.

Let's see ... my local paper. Well, TWO, count 'em, TWO high school band directors here have been arrested for having sex with 16-year-olds at their respective schools. Gas is at an all-time high ... let's see, what else ... guy murdered in his home; cops didn't tell anyone about it (including the neighbors) for four days ... people aren't recycling like they're supposed to (they're throwing the bottles and cans in the trash!) ... oh ... a little boy who fell out a window and spent 11 days in a coma several months ago is just fine now. OK ... there is some good news. But ya' sure have to DIG to FIND it these days!!

15. Don't forget to row row row your boat gently down the stream.
Even if things are scary I'm refusing to be scared. Life is short no matter what. We don't have to be scared on any account. Look your fear in the eye and say no.

16. First they shocked and awed all those other countries...
Then they shocked and awed their own. 7 years and counting... We're gonna make it. Together we can.

And we will. A humbled and a better nation will emerge from the wreckage of this reckoning.

I can feel it in my bones. You know, many Europeans look at Americans and see them as adolescents, emotionally immature, not yet capable of empathy. These crises all converging will turn a lot of armchair cowboys and phony patriots into real men.

17. i wish i could stop coming to DU
because it's become so toxic and depressing. But like a moth drawn to a flame, I keep coming back and getting singed. Most people are not subjected to the volume of negative news that we see here. This place also attracts people who are looking to pick fights with anyone who dares disagree with them. I'm so sick of it all.

But I can't leave. There are too many good posts that I can't afford to miss.

It's exhausting on so many levels.

take care ....

21. Free Republic is the Answer!
I'm so sick of it all.

The next time you feel overwhelmed, do what I do (and have done daily for the last 5.5 years). I go to Free Republic, read the posts there for 30 minutes or so, and just when I'm about to burst out in tears of misery, disgust and frustration, then I come here! No matter how bad it is on Democratic Underground, it's never-ever-EVER as bad as it is on Free Republic!

You should try it. It really works. The only problem is that it seems as if there are a few Freepers who've figured this out too, judging by the rancor that's beginning to surface here, particularly around racial/gender issues.

on the news, they talk about the one that caught fire. Not that things aren't bad, they are, but at least it isn't the middle ages. Anyway, sounds like you need a puppy fix.
