58. As was I, but it was decidedly more difficult than the OP...
If you eliminate the rule that the first and last letters have to be in order then it becomes nothing more than a string of scrambled words. I don't think those could be scanned as easily. That's the whole point.

17. That's awesome!
I read it like normal. How cool!

We read by context and intuition a lot of times. Just try one of those exercises where you read a passage and then answer how many times the letter "f" appears. You always get it wrong because the eye doesn't pick up every little letter, just the overall word and sentence.

42. Could read it
yes, but as I was reading it, comprehension lagged. I had to stop and unscramble each word instead of reading it through. Perhaps there is an opposite to dyslexia? Sort of the failure to understand anything that isn't spelled right? ;)

22. Clever, not. "Reading" the above took more effort than a correctly-spelled example would have.
Oh, and note: The ONLY way we can read the OP is BECAUSE we all know the CORRECT spellings, to "get" the transpositions.

Edited on Fri Apr-11-08 12:06 PM by PerfectSage
I couldn't beleive that I could actually understand what I was reading. The phenomenal power of the human mind, according to a research at Cambridge University, it doesn't matter in what order the letters in a word are, the only important thing is that the first and last letter be in the right place. The rest can be a total mess and you can still read it without a problem. This is because the human mind does not read every letter by itself, but the word as a whole. Amazing huh? Yeah and I was always spelling was tghuhot??? tghuhat???important.

63. Try scrambling the word order, too
English is like Chinese - it encodes A LOT of the meaning in the word order, whereas other languages like the Slavic ones encode in the individual words instead.

So if you scramble the words in that sentence, very few if any people would be able to put it back together or even have a clue as to what the sentence is about. Actually, for simpler, low-context sentences, scrambling the word order means they can't be reliably reconstructed by anyone. How can you figure out whether "the ball" "Jane" "hit" was originally "the ball hit Jane" or "Jane hit the ball"?
