Soldier's Iraq Rape and Murder Trial Delayed to Accommodate Quilt Show
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,345271,00.html

PADUCAH, Kentucky — The trial of a former U.S. soldier charged with raping a 14-year-old Iraqi girl and murdering her and her family near a checkpoint near Mahmoudiya, a village 20 miles south of Baghdad, Iraq, has been delayed by two weeks to accommodate a quilt show.

U.S. District Judge Thomas Russell ordered former Pvt. Steven D. Green's trial delayed from April 13, 2009 to April 27 because the National American Quilt show is in Paducah during the original trial date. Attendance at the show would make it difficult to secure enough hotel rooms for trial participants, Russell said in a ruling issued Tuesday. Jury selection in the case will begin April 6, Russell ruled.

Green, 22, faces a possible death sentence if convicted on 16 charges that include premeditated murder and aggravated sexual assault. He pleaded not guilty in November 2006.

Green was deployed in Iraq with the 101st Airborne Division when the assault took place in 2006.

3. It's not about the quilt show. It's about the limited qty of hotel rooms in Paducah.

Prosecutors say former soldier's case belongs in civilian court

03/23/2008

By BRETT BARROUQUERE / Associated Press

Federal prosecutors say the rape and murder case against a former Fort Campbell soldier belongs in civilian court.

Prosecutors said in court filings that Steven D. Green was properly discharged from the military before being charged as a civilian with raping and killing an Iraqi girl and killing her family in 2006. Prosecutors also argued that the decision to seek the death penalty for Green is valid and the case is supported by evidence.

Green, 22, of Midland, Texas, faces a possible death sentence if convicted of charges that include premeditated murder and aggravated sexual assault. He pleaded not guilty in November 2006.

Four other soldiers pleaded guilty or were convicted in the rape and killings.

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. (AP) — A soldier convicted for his role in the rape and murder of an Iraqi teenager was sentenced to 110 years in prison, the longest of four soldiers found guilty in the case.

Pfc. Jesse Spielman, who was sentenced Saturday, has the possibility of parole after 10 years. The sentence capped a week of opposing views over Spielman's responsibility in the rape and murder of 14-year-old Abeer Qassim al-Janabi and the slayings of her family.

5. k&r for RIP Abeer, Hadeel, Qassim, Fakhriya, Kristian, Thomas
Abeer was the teen, Hadeel her little sister, Qassim the dad, Fakhriya the mom, Kristian and Thomas USA soldiers who were most likely killed in retaliation.

Thank you for posting this, was waiting to see what happened this spring.

7. Is that quilt by association?
Or is it just a cover up?

Steven Green was the instigator, murderer, rapist.

He was discharged from the military for psych reasons before this came out. After a couple soldiers were abducted and killed from the same area one of the other guys involved spoke out and was arrested, along with a couple other soldiers. Meanwhile, Green is free and easy back in the USA civilian world.

So far the others have had military trials and been convicted of various things. Looks like Mr.Green volunteered to rejoin military for military trial but was told no (found that tidbit while searching articles about him).

I don't know what proof they will have except for having found all the others guilty, will be watching to see.
