Rev. Jeremiah Wright criticizes media at Eugene Pincham funeral
OBAMA'S FORMER PASTOR | Fires back at Fox News during sermon at Pincham funeral

April 13, 2008

BY ART GOLAB Staff Reporter agolab@suntimes.com

-snip-
Reflecting on the late Pincham, Wright said his faith “was not the jingoistic, chauvinistic ‘you’re either with us or against us’ demonizing kind of faith.” Wright said Pincham was friends with “Jews, Muslims, rabbis, imams, fathers in the Catholic church and Farrakhan in the Islamic faith.”

Escalating into full-preaching mode, Wright thundered, “Fox News can’t understand that. O’Reilly will never get that. Sean Hannity’s stupid fantasy will keep him forever stuck on stupid when it comes to comprehending how you can love a brother who does not believe what you believe. faith was a faith in a God who loved the whole world not just one country or one creed.”

At that point, congregants nearly drowned Wright out with a booming standing ovation.

Wright also referred to Fox News as “Fix News.”

10. No, probably Obama's PR firm or campaign advisors. A good idea, BTW.
It undoes some of the damage with the liberal white left.

BTW, this is not a slam against Obama--just the opposite. Let's see how much this preacher does. If he goes on Bill O's show and shouts him down, things could get interesting.
:)

8. Advising him well? Good PR? Why don't you think he just isn't coming out and stating the truth on
his own accord? From what I've heard, Wright is a very intelligent man, and as I'm sure you've seen (ad nauseum on those 15 second clips), he has no problem speaking out.

11. Damage control needed to be done and Obama would have been a fool to let a loose canon like that
give himself more media exposure without having the campaign's PR people guide him. That would be the smart thing to do and I think this is what we are seeing.

The preacher may really hate Fox Noise--so many of us do. But I am sure he was advised what topics to stick to and how to approach them.

20. The damage for Obama's campaign was too great to simply shut him up
This way, the damage done is mitigated. If some Hilary supporter says, Hey remember that preacher who hates white America? The answer NOW is, that was taken out of context, he hates Fox Noise so he can't be all bad.

Like I said, this was well done. It doesn't follow the "Shut him up" rule book, which would be bound to still rankle with the base. Remember, Obama still has to make his case against Hilary.

about Bosnia. Sleeping dogs are better left to lie. We will never see eye to eye on this.

32. Wright has a huge following and is held in high regard
all over the country and in other countries. He's actually bigger than Obama, lol, and is under no obligation to change his behavior in any way to service the Obama campaign.

In other words, there is no way anyone could shut him up even if they tried.

The man holds several advanced degrees, speaks six languages, has three presedential commendations and, well, you get the picture.

34. The funny thing is that I agree with his God Damn America sermon.
In context it summed up what I've been dealing with emotionally since the great train wreck of justice in 2000.

28. I appreciate puns.
"Loose canon".

Punning on "loose cannon".

Canon:
one of a body of dignitaries or prebendaries attached to a cathedral or a collegiate church; a member of the chapter of a cathedral or a collegiate church.
2. Roman Catholic Church. one of the members (canons regular) of certain religious orders.

Ok, Wright's not Catholic, but some leeway is allowed.

12. This Soooo Reminds Me Of Chicago, 1983...
The mayoral election...first was the primary where Harold Washington had to beat out Jane Byrne and Richie Daley, then faced a repugnican whose campaign slogan was "before its too late".

Wright On, Reverend Wright. Growing up in Chicago, I knew of Eugene Pincham...as well as many other black leaders of the 60's, 70's and 80's...a politically and racially charged and changing time. It's a world that Hillary didn't live in the upper middle class burb of Park Ridge...and surely Flyboy Grandpa had no clue of...or that he even knew "colored people" existed.

This whole fiasco is a very thin cover of the racism that still rides among Americans...especially repugnicans. It's not Reverend Wright's words as much as the "angry black man" syndrome that drives the hate radio crowd. It's a blatant attempt to play the race card..."before its too late".

Real heros speak up to injustice (not always gracefully)and take chances even if they are likely to be misunderstood. The man is a true patriot.

were busy avoiding combat in Vietnam, Rev. Wright served as a Marine and as a Medic in theater. That sounds like something a hero would do. chimp and darth, not so much...

19. right, someone sent this to me yesterday...

In 1961, a young African-American man, after hearing President John F. Kennedy's challenge to, "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country," gave up his student deferment, left college in Virginia and voluntarily joined the Marines.

In 1963, this man, having completed his two years of service in the Marines, volunteered again to become a Navy corpsman. (They provide medical assistance to the Marines as well as to Navy personnel.)

The man did so well in corpsman school that he was the valedictorian and became a cardiopulmonary technician. Not surprisingly, he was assigned to the Navy's premier medical facility, Bethesda Naval Hospital, as a member of the commander in chief's medical team, and helped care for President Lyndon B. Johnson after his 1966 surgery. For his service on the team, which he left in 1967, the White House awarded him three letters of commendation.

What is even more remarkable is that this man entered the Marines and Navy not many years after the two branches began to become integrated. While this young man was serving six years on active duty, Vice President Dick Cheney, who was born the same year as the Marine/ sailor, received five deferments, four for being an undergraduate and graduate student and one for being a prospective father.

Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, both five years younger than the African-American youth, used their student deferments to stay in college until 1968. Both then avoided going on active duty through family connections.

Who is the real patriot? The young man who interrupted his studies to serve his country for six years or our three political leaders who beat the system? Are the patriots the people who actually sacrifice something or those who merely talk about their love of the country?

After leaving the service of his country, the young African-American finished his final year of college, entered the seminary, was ordained as a minister, and eventually became pastor of a large church in one of America's biggest cities.

This man is The Rev. Jeremiah Wright, the retiring pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ.

24. Bad move
If I was Wright, I would NEVER dignify Fox with a response, especially at a funeral, as they will jump on him for that hard now. If he would want to explain himself, I think 60 Minutes would be the best forum for it.
