This AP photo of a mother and her two children as father leaves for Iraq the second time
will remind us what a lie can do. If this picture were shown to Bush**-Rove I am sure it would not affect them at all. A reasonable person can't look at very long. I wish every American had this picture at the front of their mind when it is time to vote. (I realize the photos of injuries and death from Iraq are more difficult to bear, but this is a different kind of pain). There has to be a special payback for Bush**-Rove and their crowd.

12. the immediate human pain, at least -- when i think of the destruction of Iraqi architechture
museums and history, i get nauseous.

thing is though, our infrastructure is going the same way only by neglect instead of bombs.

5. K & R
This is what the election should be about. This is what the primaries should be about.

This is the first war were all the pain and sacrifice has been with such a small group of men and women and their families.

7. So very sad. I am glad to have read it again,a little slower as I
thought that they were at their loved ones funeral. I pray to God that this man will make it back, in one piece, unaffected by the brutalities that he will most likely witness.

13. It tears the kids up
My brother had five young children when he left....6 when he returned. The kids would cry at the drop of hat, especially the only girl. She would scream that she hated the navy and would cry and beg him to come home when he called.

I'm not sure what will happen if they reactivate him yet again.

As scary as it was for my family, it was the worse type of terror for my older nephews who were old enough to realize daddy might get blown up.

17. I still imagine a world in which we've evolved beyond war.
The trauma caused by a forced separation from a parent has damaging long-term effects. Not to mention the stress of living with the dread, 24/7, that there will be a knock on the door to crush the whole family.

Why do we allow our "leaders" to use the lives of our defenders as tools of international policy? There's a world of difference between risking lives to actually defend the nation from attack, and spending them to build empire across the world.

19. I was naive enough to believe we had begun to evolve away from war,
despite the Republican hate machine that revved itself up to maximum drive during the nineties. I mistakenly thought that Vietnam, Lebannon, Panama, The First Gulf War, Rawands, Cambodia, etc. had taught us lessons that we would remember long enough to grow totally away from war.

I guess I dared to hope.

It is said that hope springs eternal in the human breast.

But hope too long deferred sickens the heart.

22. At the risk of irritating some, this
doesn't move me a lot (and I'm active duty). Perhaps I've gotten numb to it.

When we joined the military we knew that this could happen, and a service member's spouse should accept that before marrying someone in the military. Initial grief/the departure and first few days of deployment are the worst. Being in the military means going through lots of sacrifice to protect other Americans...despite how shrub views things.

I'm thoroughly against this modern-day Vietnam fiasco, and I also believe it's possible to "support the troops without supporting the President". Those words came from helmut-head while the Big Dog was in office. I think that phrase applies now.

What about all the single men and women who go over there? Several of them don't have a spouse/significant other or children...nobody.

When I came back from my deployment all I got from my then fiancee was a good yelling. Nobody met me at the airport...took a cab home...and got yelled at then had to sleep on the couch for a few nights. I would've been better off staying deployed.
