AP poll: More avoid buying homes
Edited on Mon Apr-14-08 10:14 AM by dkf
A growing majority say they won't buy a home anytime soon, the latest sign of increasing pessimism about the nation's housing crisis, a poll showed Monday.

In a vivid sketch of how the sputtering real estate market is causing distress throughout the country, the Associated Press-AOL Money & Finance poll found that more than a quarter of homeowners worry their home will lose value over the next two years. Fully one in seven mortgage holders fear they won't be able to make their monthly payments on time over the next six months.

1. New homes in my neighborhood have had their prices slashed by $100,000.
Two small sub-divisions were started in 2007. Many are still under construction. Many haven't sold.

3. That's an odd headline. I would imagine most
people would want to own a home - if they could afford to. People are no more "avoiding" home ownership than they are "avoiding" having the income to make it happen.

5. People might be avoiding it
because of falling values. Why buy today what you can get at 50-57% of the price in 12-18 months?

4. When all the houses eventually lose enough value,
tons of house flippers and first-time buyers will snatch up the cheap ones. I'm waiting for my area to drop a bit more, maybe I could snatch up a little 25-30 thousand dollar house in a bad but soon to be gentrified neighborhood.
