Berlusconi Is Back
By MATTHEW KAMINSKI
April 15, 2008; Page A18

Rome

Silvio Berlusconi is set to become Italy's prime minister again, following a convincing victory in yesterday's parliamentary elections. But although the flamboyant businessman-turned-politician was his old self at his final campaign rally – embracing former Playboy model and neofascist pol Alessandra Mussolini (Benito's granddaughter) with cheers of "Andiamo! Andiamo!" (Let's go!) – something felt different.

For all his familiar Viagra cracks and promises to put "hotties" in his cabinet, Mr. Berlusconi didn't look to have his heart in this race. His platform was far less ambitious than in the past.

His critics ran low on vitriol too, with author and Silvio-critic Beppe Severgnini noting "less hatred in the air than before."

1. Revolting man...
and there is something fundamentally corrupt about someone being both a media mogul and a politician at the same time.

Of course, he's corrupt in lots of ways - should have been in jail long ago.
