Bill Prohibits Spanking With Wooden Spoon, Switch

UPDATED: 4:23 pm PDT April 15, 2008

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- A bill banning many types of spanking in California moved forward in the state legislature Tuesday.

The bill, which would prohibit spanking with a device such as a wooden spoon, little paddle, rolled-up newspaper, switch, belt or brush, passed the Assembly Public Safety Committee.

Critics of bill AB 2943 said it violates the rights of parents.

"AB 2943 will result in good parents being arrested, handcuffed and charged with criminal child abuse," said Randy Thomasson, president of Campaign for Children and Families (CCF), in a prepared statement.

3. This law is F'ing ridiculous
And yes I've been spanked by a paddle (in the 5th grade), a switch and a belt. And yes I deserved it. What is this world coming to? As I read on some other site, It's amazing that the greatest generation ever survived, let alone win WWII. :eyes: :wtf:

5. Hint: making you grow up believing you "deserved" that IS the damage.
Undamage yourself.

6. Without it
I think that I would have never grown up to be a college grad, responsible citizen, and not a jail bird. It happens that I disagree with you. Good night.

9. I don't but
my friends and family tried time out and finally had to resort to spanking. It made a world of difference.

16. I got spanked twice with "the belt"
I don't recall why. All I remember is being spanked with "the belt".

No lesson was learned.

Fear was learned, but no lesson.

21. Hmmmm...I did stupid shit when I was young...
My parents didn't spank me...but disciplined me by actually TALKING to me, and I've turned out alright.

Maybe it wasn't the belt. Maybe it was you. Maybe you matured. Corporal punishment is backwards assed and strikes me as a punishment suitable for parents that either don't have the patience or skills to try to reason with their child.

Discipling children without the use of physical punishment is often more time consuming and frustrating in the short term, but beating your kid (and whipping a kid with a belt is abuse as far as I'm concerned) can lead to some seriously damage. Even good parents can make 'mistakes' leading to injuries.

7. There are already laws against beating your kids
Unfortunately, enforcement is nearly impossible.

This law would change nothing.

And, yes, spanking is wrong. All it teaches is that beating someone smaller than you is okay.

Whatta ya bet lil' Georgie got the crap beat outta him? Why else would he have blown up frogs with firecrackers?

Love is what kids need, not beatings.

11. Read Alice Miller.
She wrote about the German authoritarian culture in which the child's will must be broken (see Texas Cult drowning infants until they are exhausted).
This severe physical, emotional and mental abuse of children was widespread and normal in late 19th century German. It produced serial killers and Adolf Hitler.

And if Alice Miller is too deep for you, read John Bradshaw's books. He popularized and broadened her findings.

I wish they had had a law against spanking and switching when I was a kid. I thought I would never be a good person, and I didn't do anything wrong. I just wanted to socialize with the neighbor kids. The parents thought playing with the neighbor kids was WRONG.

Physical abuse creates psychopaths and sociopaths.

17. I do give a rats ass about people.
That's why I'm a liberal. If I didn't care for people, I would be a Republican.

I was in a horseshit mood yesterday. I'd like to apologize for the way I acted. I was the one who told the mods to remove the posts I posted in that thread yesterday because I knew how stupid it was.

It takes a big person to admit they were wrong and to do it in public is admirable.

They locked the thread instead. Thank You for clarifying that. .

20. I was under the impression that was already the law here.
Once, when I was in my teens and babysitting for money, the mom I sat for insisted that I was too lenient with her kid. Generally I showed up for her late dates, and all I had to do was feed him, get his pjs on him and put him to bed, so other than reading two or three books before turning out the light I have no idea how I was being lenient. She told me that if he stepped out of line I should spank him with her hairbrush, which was what she did. :wow: You could have knocked me over with a feather. That kid was two, and tiny for his age. Poor little guy. Needless to say, I never did any such thing, and I watched him for years with no real misbehavior to speak of, I think the worst he ever did was whine a bit about going to bed and ask to stay up a few more minutes.

One thing I remember very clearly about that kid- I did teach him how to get along with his mom's cranky old cat. She yelled at him for bothering her and said the cat was a mean old bitch for scratching him, but never taught him how to pet her gently and move quietly to avoid startling her. It only took me a few tries to teach him how to treat her gently, and there were no more crying scratched boys and hissing cats to deal with after that. That's the problem with authoritarian parenting- it teaches kids what not to do (bother the cat) but does not emphasize how to do the correct thing (be gentle with the cat.)
