Yellow Stickers Used To Curb Car Theft
50 Residents Sign Up For Program

PALM BAY, Fla. -- Police in Palm Bay have simplified Combat Auto Theft, a program that allows participants to place a yellow sticker on their back window to make it easier for police to spot cars that might be stolen.

The stickers, placed on the left side of the rear window, direct officers to pull over cars being driven between 1 and 5 a.m., officer Ron Lugo told Local 6 News partner Florida Today. Lugo is with the Neighborhood Policing Unit, which includes six officers and a sergeant.

The sticker, if seen on cars during the early-morning hours, constitutes probable cause that the car is being stolen, Lugo said.

Statistics show that most cars are stolen in the early-morning hours without the owners' knowledge.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Florida Legislature mandated and designed a standard Combat Auto Theft decal to be used throughout the state.

"Obviously, things happen, and we take that into account," he said. "The stop is just to verify who the driver is and why they are out at that time of night."

2. I know right
Hahaha I think that if you can figure out how to hotwire a car and defeat the damn near standard security features you can figure out how to remove a sticker. HAH funny funny. All you'd need is a razorblade and about 15 seconds.

4. They had these in RI in the early 90's. Then someone started putting stickers on them saying.......

....."This person is giving up the Constitutional Rights we at the VFW died for. They have no right to be called an American."

It took only a few of these second stickers being put on people's cars before the whole project was scrapped. The VFW denied having made the stickers.

6. Why not just ask the thief to write "stolen" on the back window. Just as effective.

10. This caught my eye
"The stop is just to verify who the driver is and why they are out at that time of night."

If someone chooses to be involved in this program so be it, but the part about verifying the ownership of the vehicle is one thing but to ask the driver why they are out at that hour! What's that got to do with your car being stolen?

Peace!
