It's a show about polygamous wives and women who have escaped from polygamy. It shows a fairly broad perspective and portrays a bunch of happy polygamous families, but it also has some women who left polygamy because they were abused and scared.

and I was able to do this:

The program showed several polygamous families--there are more than one sect that practices it. One group,belonging to the TLC, said that women have the right to choose their own spouses, education for women is honored, and that the families live in harmony. Yet another mother and her daughter told of the head of the TLC dissolving the daughter's marriage so that she could marry him--something about it was her only ticket out of hell. Anyway, this dude had also married the daughter's mom--both thought it really strange, and the daughter said she felt he was a phony and fraud interested only in sex--she has left the church. Another woman helps those who try to escape from the FLDS compounds, and introduced us to one of the girls who left, who painted the horror story of abuse and forced marriage that we've heard about in the news. Sadly, she said her own mother couldn't keep track of birthdays of her children or really give them any positive emotional support, as the church teaches that all emotions are to be suppressed.

I am currently living in three different houses with three different women, who are all friends.

But I can't write them off as dependants for tax purposes. And that's one of the things that bugs me about polygamy. Those guys get write-downs on all those women and kids.

They only "claim" the first (usually the legal ) wife and her children.

The other wives and kids get supported with OUR money.
They said on TV the "welfare" checks go to the church leadership and not the moms.. so these dogs get paid for having those kids. It is time for the statye to track down whos kids are whose and make THEM support the kids.

17. I watched the whole thing, and it's very balanced

and a great program on the advantages and disadvantages of polygamy. It's very telling that the women enjoying the best relationships were adults when they entered into them, that they held veto power over any new spouse entering the family, and that none was forced to enter a polygamous marriage.

The problems with the FLDS take on polygamy are that marriages are forced on girls below the age of consent, that women are completely powerless, that they're all overwhelmed by the number of children they're supposed to birth year after year, and that it's a scam to rob taxpayers to support all these kids.

One variety they didn't examine was the serial polygamy practiced by a lot of men, discarding wives and children again and again in favor of younger, racier wives. That type of polygamy is just as devastating to women and children as the involuntary polygamy of the FLDS. Serial polyandry as practiced by a few women is hard on the kids, too, as step fathers tend to be very hard on the offspring of the castoff husband.

I have known one plural marriage family. It worked well for the women, all adults and college educated. It worked so well, in fact, that they kicked the husband out and kept living with each other.

But her story reminded me of that girl a few years ago who was supposed to marry her uncle in one of those communities. This girl who was in the news was 16 and she just wanted to finish high school first. :(

Rich old white men aren't the only ones doing it. My own ex is now on #3 or #4, forget which. I've worked with people who were on #5-7, people who certainly seemed normal enough. I guess their mamas raised them right, they believe in marriage.

It's still polygamy.
