After the barrage of ads, I check out Divided We Fail
Edited on Thu Apr-17-08 08:40 PM by Phoebe Loosinhouse
After all, healthcare is almost my Primary issue (after war, torture and ripping up the Constitution)

The ads make it seem like this is an organization that is pushing some concrete program to deal with healthcare.

Here's the link so you can check it out for yourself.

http://www.aarp.org/issues/dividedwefail/about_issues/our_platform.html

My impressions:
1. It appears to be an AARP website

2. The "platform" has all kinds of health platitudes about positions, but offers NO specific answers about anything. Zilch, nada, none.

3. Every page has a "Share Your Experience" option

My conclusions.
This is a website designed to make people THINK they are part of some kind of grassroots effort to demand affordable healthcare. It offers NOTHING concrete or specific about Who or What this website supports THAT I CAN FIND. (I could be wrong, if so, please educate me)

Forgive me for being Cynical. AARP lost a HUGE number of their members when they came out for the Medicaid Prescription Drug Illusion that was foisted on all of us by the Bush administration. The most famous part of which remains the prescription AGAINST competitive bidding of drug prices.

I think this site (Divided We Fail) exists solely to collect names and emails of people who are concerned about healthcare, financial management, long term care, etc. with the goal of creating a database to be SOLD to. (my opinion only)

AARP was once a lobbying organization for the concerns of the older Americans. They morphed into an organization that pretty much sells insurance.

What am I missing? Do you know better? If so, please post.

1. I posted a question about this months ago
nobody really knew then either. My guess is that AARP chair sells health care supplements and is trying to push for a medicare type program so he can sell more of his supplements.

2. Business Roundtable, NFIB, AARP??
I don't trust any of them. What is SEIU doing joining them in anything?

I think it looks like a coalition to pressure Congress into moving on health care, just pushing the debate.

AARP was started by an insurance agent back in the 50's. That's always been the basis of the organization. I wonder if seniors would have better Medicare if AARP hadn't been pushing supplemental insurance.

4. No, that's about it. They're trying to gain back some of
the suckers they lost when they went GOP and fought for that hideous prescription bill that gave gifts to HMOs a year before a single retired person got a single drug.

5. My impressions match your own. AARP lost all it's credibility
when it became just another insurance peddler. I fear they are completely beyond redemption. I wish there was a trustworthy lobby for seniors to take it's place.

6. I think you guys are overreacting.
AARP only supported that program on an "it's better than nothing" basis. It turned out to NOT be better than nothing, but that isn't a reason to right-off the whole organization. I'm a member, and my auto insurance through them is half what it was before. Maybe that's not much to you, but it sure helps me!
