McCain's Offensive Words
By Cenk Uygur

http://news.aol.com/newsbloggers/2008/04/17/mccains-offensive-words/

While the country is busy picking apart every word Obama ever uttered, or anyone he knows has ever uttered, John McCain gets to say anything he wants. Earlier this week, he said that the decision to invade Iraq was "academic." Is he saying that the lives of all our troops that died there are academic http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/04/16/mccain-well-look-back-on_n_96979.html?!

If I was a Republican, I would pretend to be outraged by this. Then I would pretend that he meant this as a grave insult to our troops. Then I would demand that all the news stations run the comment 24/7 until he apologized and admitted he "misspoke."

And since apparently almost no one in the media has a brain of their own, they would all go along with it. Of course, that's if John McCain was a Democrat. But since he is a Republican and a "maverick," the press loves him and would never speak an unkind word about him http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jE96K01YO24. It's not their job to challenge Republicans; it's their job to challenge Democrats. God knows if they challenged Republicans with half the aggressiveness with which they go after Democrats, they might be called liberals!! Heaven forfend!

John McCain mixed up Sunnis and Shiites when talking about Iraq on several occasions http://thinkprogress.org/2008/03/18/mccain-iran-al-qaeda/. If Barack Obama had done that, they would have ripped his liver out and fed it to the crows. They would have said he was a foreign policy novice who wasn't ready to be Commander-in-Chief. McCain does it and nary a peep.

He must have misspoken, because we all know he is a foreign policy expert. And exactly how do we know that? Well, he has so much foreign policy experience. The same experience that led him to enthusiastically support the disastrous Iraq War. The decision he now claims is academic.

Well, of course, it isn't academic. It's critical to how he would govern as president. But since this is actually a relevant issue, the press has decided to ignore it. So, let me explain why this shows exactly why you shouldn't vote for John McCain: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OujGiAF8Apo&eurl

PS---A new example of the media kissing McCain's ass: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=385&topic_id=120807&mesg_id=120807

2. Because, Cenk, there's no NEWS there yet.
No RATINGS to be had. No juicy fighting between candidates. Money. it's always the money. The Dems in-fighting is bringing in the viewers and the advertising dollars.

We've got a lot of ground to cover when our nom is decided, and they'd sure as hell better give it some coverage then.

3. Because the Dem Primary isn't decided
Actually its because the Dems are locked into their battle for the nomination. Pick the nominee; then everyone can concentrate on opper-research.

8. Thanks for reminding me, here are some great McCain links to spread...
Cliff Schecter talks with TYT about his new book The Real McCain, which exposes the terrible things McCain allegedly said about his wife, fist fights and more (This is the entire segment): http://youngturks.wmod.llnwd.net/a591/o1/4-8-08Schecter.wmv

Also, if you want to read Cliff's Huffington Post piece yesterday about what John McCain has now said about this book, and a link to Cliff's website, use the upcoming DU link. Dial-Uppers Take Note, you should also use this link for a short article describing some of what Cenk discusses in the interview above: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=3128784&mesg_id=3128784

Finally, an article by Cenk comparing the McCain of 2000 with the McCain of 2008 (must send to anyone who is considering voting for McCain): http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0308/9000.html

12. But even many at DU don't talk about McCain much.
We spend far more time on Hillary/Obama.

To some extent I understand and have no problem with that, but threads about McCain should be getting the recs and views too. Instead they sink (along with threads with *substantive* criticism of Hillary/Obama) while threads with cheap jokes and cheap shots on the dems sky rocket, and people go back and forth with the same tired arguments.

Obama rocks!!! No, Hillary does!!! No, he she doesn't!!!

I don't get it. Again, I am ALL FOR substantive criticism about their tactics and policy positions. But what I'm talking about is something else entirely.

20. Yep
The idea that an extended primary is somehow "good for the Democrats" is pure and utter bullshit in my opinion. It's BAD, plain and simple.

Good for McCain though.

14. I agree with everything you said
I think that some of the reasons that DUers are letting McBush off are:
1. We have enough intelligence to let a slip of the tongue be a slip of the tongue and not a major issue. (This doesn't apply to his repeated mixing up Sunnis and Shiites.)
2. Fatigue and overload. We're so accustomed to imbeciles (Bush, Reagan) that it's hard to bother noting the same things that we've noted hundreds or thousands of times before.
3. We still have our own undecided contest, so we haven't yet shifted our attention to McBush.

As for why substantive criticisms of our candidates sink while quickie cheap shots get lots of Ks and Rs: In order to avoid violating the rules and having this post deleted, I'll just let you use your imagination.
