McCain: ‘There’s Been Great Progress Economically’ Since Bush Took Office»

Earlier this week, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) delivered a speech on the economy in which he outlined his ambitious plan to cut taxes and balance the budget. McCain’s plan would extend President Bush’s tax cuts, reduce corporate tax rates, repeal the alternative minimum tax (AMT), and increase exemptions for dependents.

But unfortunately for McCain, “economists and nonpartisan analysts” have dug deeper into the details of his plan and concluded that the numbers simply “don’t add up.” The offsets he proposes will not cover the estimated $3.3-$5.7 trillion cost of the proposal and would end up ballooning the federal deficit. Bloomberg News reports:

“The huge imbalance” in McCain’s plan “is that the tax cuts are specific and large and the spending cuts are small and vague,” said Robert Bixby, executive director of the Washington- based Concord Coalition. <…>

This is really a massive increase in the deficit,” said Joel Slemrod, an economist specializing in tax policy at the University of Michigan. <…>

Stan Collender, a former analyst for the House and Senate budget committees {… said} “there’s no way McCain could balance {his budget} by the time he leaves, unless he doesn’t leave for 25 years.”

20. He just doesn't seem to have any ideas of his own.
I don't see the appeal, except maybe to people who are very afraid and never leave their houses. No, even there... who? who could possibly .... waita minnit! maybe the same people that gave GW his ideas?

9. "Great progress economically" ... for CORPORATIONS
Not for their workers. Corporate profits are at all-time highs, worker
productivity is also high but salaries are FLAT.

It's all about parsing language ... and about who you're standing up
for. Bomb Bomb's corporate supporters are quite pleased with all this
"progress" we've been making under RatBastard.

15. McCain has no viable economic plan..
Edited on Fri Apr-18-08 06:51 PM by Virginia Dare
he's said that he plans to follow the Greenspan model. Right, that worked out real well for us, didn't it?

I just have to say, anybody who votes for McCain is stupid, psychotic or a sado-masochist.

My "n" key is broke!!

19. So stupid it hurts
not McCain, of course - he's crazy like a fox, and knows where his bread is buttered. I speak of anyone NOT already in the billionaire's club (Bush's "base" of haves and have-mores) who votes for McCain based on his plan to "fix" our economy. This would put the fix in, all right - for the top 1%.

24. For what its worth, the quote in the title isn't exactly accurate
http://youtube.com/watch?v=WynLgJFBxSs

REPORTER: Let me ask you a version of the Ronald Reagan question. Do you think if Americans were asked "Are you better off today than before George Bush took office more than seven years ago, what answer would they give?

MCCAIN: Certainly, at this time we are in very challenging times. We all recognize that. Families are sitting around the kitchen table this evening figuring out whether they're gonna be able to keep their home or not. They're figuring out whether they're--why it is that suddenly and recently someone in their family, their neighbors lost their job. There's no doubt that we're in enormous difficulties. I think if you look at the overall record and may, in some jobs being created et cetera, et cetera, you could make an argument that there's been great progress economically over that period of time. But that's no comfort, that's no comfort to families now that are facing these tremendous economic challenges. But let me just add, Peter, the fundamentals of the American economy are strong. We're the greatest exporter, the greatest importer, the greatest innovator, the greatest producer, and still the greatest economic engine in the world. And by the way, exports and free trade are a key element in an economic recovery. But these are tough times, tough times, and nobody knows that more than American families, including in small towns in Pennsylvania.
