Our youngest was in a car accident last night

I never felt comfortable in the lounge where this probably belongs. I spend more time in the Labor Forum since it started. But traffic and posts by others is increasing. So the day is coming when I'll have more time here again. GD has a down to earth feel, and most of my friends are here.

Last night our youngest daughter was in a car accident. She saw the other driver coming the wrong way in a parking lot and stopped her car. The SUV had four kids in it and wasn't even looking. It spun the front end of beanie's car around. The air bag didn't deploy in her taurus. She did have her seat belt on even though she was only going from where they parked to the curb for a chair they bought at ShopKo. Her husband was at the curb and could only watch it happen. ShopKo and several witnesses came to their aid. The manager offered the surveillance tapes if needed. The follow up investigation clearly shows the other car at fault.

Beanie is four months into her pregnancy. She lost her first one a few months into her first term. There were some tense moments in the family. Three hours later we were told both Beanie and child are fine. The driver and four kids in the SUV are ok too.

I'm glad it is Sunday and have time to let my nerves settle down.

1. Oh,scary,scary. It is everyone's worst nightmare
I raised two boys, and every night they were out of my sight, I would always imagine the worst that could happen. That's a parent's job, I suppose, to imagine the worst that could happen.

I'm so glad to hear your daughter and her unborn child are okay.

...I know the feeling - you need a day to freak out about all the possibilities going through your head.

13. Parking lots are incredibly dangerous...
I hate walking through parking lots thanks to something that happened to me when I was twelve.

Just be glad your daughter was not on the way to get her car.

You trained your daughter well, she had her seatbelt on.

I'm glad everyone was OK.

My closest calls have almost all been in parking lots. People drive too dang fast in them.

14. I'm glad she's ok, and as a parent I understand
the feeling from both ends.

I live in fear for my daughter each time she takes the car. And she has been the cause of an accident. It was a snowy day, and she was trying to cross a busy street, 3 cars were behind her so she felt pressured, and she went and hit a car. There was little damage, however we found out later the other driver was pregnant--everyone was ok. She got a ticket and had to go to court because she was 17--and I had to go with her. She had a long list of things to tell the judge that she had learned from this experience. And I was proud of her for figuring out what she did wrong. I remember her thinking she was going to go to jail, so I had to help her gain perspective without letting her think this wasn't a big deal.

It's been nearly 3 years, but she still talks about what she learned.

HOpefully the driver in this case learn some of the same lessons.

I've got some other baby hats to make for a friend of mine. Would she like green? I have a bright kelly green in a super soft yarn that I'm itching to knit up into some baby hats. They're super helpful to keep the heat in and keep a baby calm.

30. It's more fun to knit for someone I know than to drop it off somewhere.
I'm horribly slow at afghans and shawls, but baby hats are portable and easier to do anywhere.

34. Green would be great!

The bad news. Beanie will be home for at least two weeks. Strained muscles & tendons in her back and neck. She can't take pain killers because of the baby. She is swollen.

28. People no longer pay attention when they drive.
Especially SUV drivers. I guess they think SUVs can drive themselves somehow. Glad everyone is all right! What an ordeal.

29. We got our phone call at 2 a.m. on a Sunday morning: "This is Officer X with the Highway Patrol
Edited on Sun Apr-20-08 02:06 PM by mnhtnbb
Your son is ok but he's been in a car accident."

I think I aged about 5 years in those 5 seconds as I shook myself awake.

He was 17--and supposed to be at a friend's house overnight playing computer games. They all decided to go drive (two cars of two boys each) real cars--instead of the simulated ones--and he spun out on a turn. He took out a road sign. Thank God it wasn't a telephone pole or tree or he'd probably have been dead. The whole left side of his car was smashed where he wrapped around the sign.

Amazingly, this officer was sitting in a parking lot nearby, and when he saw the other car of friends
pull a u-turn (they'd seen our son spin out in their rear view mirror)to go back to the accident, he followed. Thank goodness he was on the scene immediately. Hubby had to go get the boys. He said it was a pretty quiet car ride home.

He got off with a ticket for speeding and we made him pay the $500 deductible for fixing the car.

So glad to hear everyone is ok.

32. My thoughts go out to you and your family
I'm glad everyone came out of it alive. Good luck to your daughter and her family! That airbag needs to be really, really checked, unless the impact was at a speed less than the ordinary deployment? (I'm helpless with cars, unfortunately) I hope the ones in the other car learn something from this accident, too. Perhaps they will think twice about driving if they can't devote their attention to doing so.

33. Someone decided to total my car on the freeway with me in it
when I was six months along. The worst thing that happened was that I had to call my husband and tell him the car was gone.

If she's all right, that's all that matters.
