accidents, birthrates, fertility, and werewolves, among other things.

Lunar Effects

Ever hear someone say “Uh oh, the moon is full, all the crazies are out.” Does full moon madness really exist?
Is there any relationship between humans and the moon? Where did this rumor come from? Is it really a rumor?

The Moon is over four billion years old, has no atmosphere or water, and is covered in rocky material, craters, basins, and highlands. We already know that the Moon affects the level of the ocean tides, causing the Earth to have two high tides per day. This occurs by the gravitational pull of the Moon pulls up a bulge of water on the side of the Earth that is facing the Moon. The high tides occur as the Earth rotates beneath this buldge of water. But if the Moon is just all rock with no atmosphere or water, what causes it to effect us? Does this same gravitational pull assist with the effects of humans when the Moon is full? The tidal force of the moon on the earth depends on its distance from earth, not its phase.

Lunacy and the Full Moon

By Hannah Holmes

Do people go crazy on the full moon?

It's an enduring bit of folk wisdom, spurred by modern-day rumors that emergency rooms fill up, oddballs act odder, and dogs howl in the streets when the moon beams. Furthermore, there are lots of perfectly rational people who will assure you they just feel a little restless around the time of the full moon. The very word "lunatic" is built on the Latin word for moon, luna. So, is there proof? If nothing else, there's proof that scientists take the question with a surprising seriousness. . Biologists, psychologists, even a dentist, have taken a crack at correlating full moons with foolishness. The results have been mixed, and mysterious: A 1983 study of calls to a poison center found that unintentional poisoning increases at the full moon; and that suicide attempts and drug abuse increase with the new moon. A 1980 study, though, couldn't link drug overdose to any lunar phase.

A 1991 study found that women in a treatment center who were developmentally delayed misbehaved more often on the full moon. But a 1994 study found no full-moon correlation with admissions to a psychiatric hospital, and a 1997 study said doctors see no increase of depressed and anxious patients.

A study of a suburban hospital's emergency room concluded the full moon brought no howling hoards.

A study of workplace absenteeism actually found more people at work on the full moon.

Another inquiry revealed that people ate 8 percent bigger meals and drank 26 percent less alcohol on full-moon days than on new-moon days. Fun stuff, though not exactly a series of smoking guns.

Once in a Blue Moon

http://www.infoplease.com/spot/bluemoon1.html

Although the full moon that occurred Tuesday, May 20, 2008, looked like an ordinary full moon, it was actually a bit extraordinary—a blue moon.
What is a Blue Moon?

There are in fact two definitions for a blue moon. According to the more recent definition, a blue moon is the second full moon in a calendar month. For a blue moon to occur, the first of the full moons must appear at or near the beginning of the month so that the second will fall within the same month (the average span between two moons is 29.5 days).
The Other Kind of Blue Moon

May 2008's blue moon qualified as such under an older definition, which is recorded in early issues of the Maine Farmer's Almanac. According to this definition, the blue moon is the third full moon in a season that has four full moons. Why would one want to identify the third full moon in a season of four full moons? The answer is complex, and has to do with the Christian ecclesiastical calendar.

Some years have an extra full moon—13 instead of 12. Since the identity of the moons was important in the ecclesiastical calendar (the Paschal Moon, for example, used to be crucial for determining the date of Easter), a year with a thirteenth moon skewed the calendar, since there were names for only 12 moons. By identifying the extra, thirteenth moon as a blue moon, the ecclesiastical calendar was able to stay on track.

For a fuller explanation see http://www.inconstantmoon.com/cyc_blue.htm. For more background information on the controversy over the two definitions of blue moon, see the Sky and Telescope article, "What's a Blue Moon?" In it they explain how the two different definitions of a blue moon came about—including their own role in introducing the second, modern definition.

-----------

How Often Does a Blue Moon Occur?

Over the next 20 years there will be about 15 blue moons, with an almost equal number of both types of blue moons occurring. No blue moon of any kind will occur in the years 2011, 2014, and 2017.

The more recent phenomenon, where the blue moon is considered to be the second full moon in a calendar month, last occurred on May 31, 2007. Two full moons in one month may occur in any month out of the year except for February, which is shorter than the lunar cycle.

The other, older blue moon event, which happens when there are four full moons in a season, last occured in August 2005. Since this type of blue moon is reckoned according to the seasons, it can only occur in February, May, August, or November, about a month before the equinox or the solstice.

2. Moon Phases
The moon has a powerful allure -- it is full of beauty, legend, myth and romance. Anyone with an interest in the moon or the phases of the moon -- for whatever reason -- should find some valuable information here, including a free current / daily moon phases website module, how to get a moon phases calendar software application, and other lunar phases information, including links.

4. Ask anyone who's ever worked in an E.R., and they'll tell you it's true, that all kinds of crazy
happen whenever there's a full moon.

My ex was on duty in the E.R. one night when a guy came in with an ear hanging by a thread, a broken nose and a fractured foot.
My husband said, "Wow, looks like someone had it in for you."
And he said, "That's nothing. Wait till you see my brother."

Five minutes later, the brother showed up. And the first guy was right.

5. LOL.... funny story. I think people do react, whether research says differently.
My Mom, who had a degree in science, used to say that if it is strong enough to effect the tides
and humans are 97% water, then it stands to reason that humans are also effected or something to
that effect. ;)

11. One guy came in with the complaint that there was a moth in his ear.
Edited on Sun Apr-20-08 02:56 PM by hisownpetard
My husband asked if the moth was dead or alive.
The guy said, "Dead."
My husband said, "How do you know for sure?"
He said, "Because I put a moth ball in there, and it hasn't moved since."

(Or at least, that's the way the story was told to me!

7. Ask any cop
They dread the full moon because of how things escalate. I remember a Philadelphia cop telling me that domestic disturbances were especially numerous and violent during a full moon.

Hence the term "lunatic."

10. One astronomer's take on it:
The Full Moon this weekend (April 20) will coincide with a rare and propitious alignment of Sun, Full Moon, Pluto and Saturn. At the time of the Full Moon (3:25 am, Pacific time), the will be forming grand trine with Pluto, and Saturn. The trining planets are all in Earth signs. This formation is made stronger by its exactness.

The event marks a moment of harmony in the workings of karma, expression, and renewal. The light of regeneration appears in the dynamics of experience and relationship. Inspiration and new vitality infuse the practical workings of the material plane. New horizons are viewed with ease. New possibilities emerge with grace.
