More than 15,000 participated in the run and walk, which is a record, and 1,200 more in the Kids Run. That number could increase significantly, because many more signed up on site. They were joined by 800 volunteers and about 2,000 others who also chipped in.

In the fourth annual Pat's Run, 15,000 runners and walkers traveled a 4.2-mile course that ended at the 42-yard line at Sun Devil Stadium. There was also a .42-mile kid race that ended at the 42-yard line.

The tradition of using 42 as a starting and ending mark is in celebration of Pat Tillman's football-jersey number, both in high school and as a Sun Devil.

Tillman, a former ASU football player, gave up a career in the NFL to become a U.S. Army Ranger. Tillman was killed by friendly fire while serving in Afghanistan in 2004.

Race director Perry Edinger said that the event has grown during the last four years from 5,500 runners in the first year to the 15,000-crowd that participated Saturday.

Soldiers honor Tillman with their own Pat's Run

It's 11 1/2 hours ahead in the world's time zones and 7,500 miles away. There are, at most, a dozen expected participants, none of whom are from Arizona or have ever met Pat Tillman. The closest they came was a visit to his USO building at Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan, where they could call home on digital phone lines.

1. There are other ways to honor him

Having an investigation to find out why he had 3 bullet holes in his forehead fired from 10 meters away would be a good start.

Its like honoring MLK by naming a street after him and never mentioning William Pepper.

2. You do realize that they're not just running, but raising money for his foundation?
Also, pretty much everyone there would agree with you.

I know because I was there as a volunteer.

3. Thats good, I wasn't trying to be offensive

It just bothers me that we are collectively as a society glossing over his death and all the unanswered questions about it. Even his parents feel there was foul play and want serious answers. I didn't want to knock the Pat Tillman foundation, just mention that if we don't investigate his death seriously it will not be truly honoring him. Its like MLK, when William Pepper convinved a civil jury that the US army helped kill him nobody cared. Coretta Scott King even recommends Pepper's book to people who want to know what happened to her husband. Instead of having a serious investigation into his death we name streets after him.

I don't know what happened to Tillman, but he gave up alot and came across as a really bright, thoughtful person. And I want to know what happened to him.

Now 40 years later there is forensic evidence RFK was killed by a 2nd gunman. People like MLK, RFK, JFK or Tillman deserve a foundation and a legacy but beyond that people need to have serious answers to what happened to them.

4. Although I agree with you I think the family doesn't want to destract from the foundation
I don't have any doubt that this whole thing came directly from the White House (Rove) there was no way they could let a story like his get out-the number coming out of the voting machines would not have been plausible.

5. I agree.
It's a damn shame that this cover up has been allowed to continue for even this long. Tillman was a good man who sacrificed everything for what he thought was right. It's a travesty and an insult to his memory that the truth has been buried.

It's still on a lot of people's minds. I talked to a lot of people at the Run, even dyed-in-the-wool Republicans who firmly support a full independent investigation into what happened. I think a lot of people feel helpless though, especially when up against the military. I can't say that I blame them. This is one of many things this administration has to answer for and it seems like justice is never served.

I guess all we can do is to keep on fighting for the truth to come out.
