Food Rationing - What the F? Anybody else experiencing this in your state?
Food Rationing Confronts Breadbasket of the World
http://nysun.com/news/food-rationing-confronts-breadbasket-world

"Major retailers in New York, in areas of New England, and on the West Coast are limiting purchases of flour, rice, and cooking oil as demand outstrips supply. There are also anecdotal reports that some consumers are hoarding grain stocks.

At a Costco Warehouse in Mountain View, Calif., yesterday, shoppers grew frustrated and occasionally uttered expletives as they searched in vain for the large sacks of rice they usually buy.

“Where’s the rice?” an engineer from Palo Alto, Calif., Yajun Liu, said. “You should be able to buy something like rice. This is ridiculous.”

--- The other day at Costco I saw more activity than usual and I did see a lot of people buying huge amounts of oil, but you know I didn't think food rationing was occurring. This article makes me wonder ... is it?

1. This story came up on another thread yesterday
No one sees any evidence of this being real as far as I know.

2. Not rationing
It's called 'hoarding,' and it's probably people who are panicked at the current cost of groceries. Buy in bulk now, and it'll cost you less than it'll cost in a few weeks.

7. I'm not sure it's even as much that
as it is manipulation of the market.

Also in a few other grocery stores in Bellingham and never experienced any problems with quantity purchases.

we sure are looking to start a home garden. Small solar generator ... sounds interesting. Good luck!

25. I wish I was talented enough to learn how to build a solar
generator. . .:-).

I've tried to stock up a little, but it's impossible on my budget.

14. I didn't see any signs at Costco on Friday
here in NM, but I imagine food hoarding is starting to be a problem with a lot of first generation Asian immigrants who have family at home telling them about the huge price jumps and shortages there.

I'll check out the oriental supermarket in a few days (I need more Krab) and I'll bet there are signs up there.

I know the people in the Chinese takeaway place in my 'hood are complaining that oil has gotten horribly expensive, odd because the oil can be pressed out before any grain crop gets turned into ethanol.

15. what have we come to?
I had some rough times in the Reagan years where all I had was rice, but at least I could eat all I wanted. I may need to consult with my Depression Era relatives for some survival pointers.

Oh they'd love it if we were all runnning around with our heads cut off.

But that's not Yankee ingenuity, is it.

Don't believe the hype.

23. Exactly. Which is why I put out to all of you to sense the situation. Someone
down thread reminded that this article is written by NY Sun owned by R. Murdoch. I'm still keeping my eyes and ears open ... you never know with Bush still in office.
