For a while anyway...

Gas Station Sells 35-Cent-A-Gallon Gasoline By Mistake
April 12, 2008 12:41 a.m. EST

Windsor Genova - AHN News Writer
Wilmington, NC (AHN) - Hundreds of motorists lined up Friday at a North Carolina gas station that unknowingly sold gasoline for 35 cents a gallon.

An attendant of the Kangaroo Express station in Wilmington accidentally set the pump price of premium gasoline to 35 cents instead of $3.35 a gallon. The mistake was discovered at 6 p.m., when a long queue of cars caused a traffic jam in the area.

1. Oh, wouldn't that be nice?
I remember back in the Dark Ages when I was first learning to drive, gasoline was about a quarter a gallon normally, sometimes down to 19 cents if there was a gas war going on. We used to pool our change to fill up the tank. Boy, those days are gone forever. Pretty sad.

4. No, those days are still here.
We are still pooling our change to afford gas. :)

24. Back in the summer of 1970...
My friend and I drove through Michigan on our way to Canada. We stopped in Detroit to visit her aunt.
Major gas war was in progress. I paid 14.9 a gallon.

Only about a 3000% increase in 38 years.

6. I even remember the days saying....
"If a gallon of gas, or a pack of cigarettes, goes over a dollar, I'll quit driving and/or smoking"

9. Me, too.
There was actually somebody to pump that gas for you, as well as check the tires and fluids and wash the windows, too.

11. Ditto.
We're starting to sound like our parents, aren't we? "Back in my day, you young whippersnapper..."

I do think it's kind of a shame about gas stations, though. It used to be a good job for a kid just out of high school, or in high school, for that matter, to pump gas. I really don't like to pump my own gas. Oregon's the only place I know of now where gas station attendants will do that for you.

16. New Jersey too
As a matter of fact, New Jersey does not allow (or did not the last I knew) self-serve gas stations.

25. Don't you hate it when that happens?
I have become my mother! :wow:

I don't mind pumping my own gas. I learned how to do it when I went through my dad's pre-driver's license orientation. He signed no driver's permit papers until my sister and I knew how to change tires, check the oil and pump gas. He also never told either of us that there was anything we couldn't do because we were girls. Daddy was a peach!

28. I can check the oil and pump the gas
but, would you believe it, in my entire 61 years of life, I've NEVER had to change a tire. The only times I've had flats I've been able to limp into a nearby gas station for assistance (obviously, that was back when gas station guys knew how to change tires). These days I just let my husband drive most of the time and deal with those hassles. I've really become quite a princess in my old age.

12. Yep!
I just received a flyer about my HS class reunion next year (our 50th) and there was one note on it reflecting that gas was 24 cents a gallon back in 1959....and we thought it was high.

13. So, hundreds of people, knowing gas is normally around $3.35
lined up to steal from this station. Damn, our country is just spiraling down the shitter.

14. My thoughts exactly.
I'd be tempted - for about a nanosecond. No WAY I could drive away with the knowledge I'd just stolen - and even worse? Call everyone I know so they can hurry up and get in on the stealing too!

15. The fact they did not consider was that *somebody* was going to have to pay the balance
and it would, more than likely, fall upon the shoulders of one or two people who definitely could not afford to pay it.

Or at least the mentality that put him close enough to steal it both times.

and said "Uh...I think y'all made a mistake on the price at pump 2."
We are a greedy, grabby, 'I got mine' people.

27. If stations weren't franchised, I'd take advantage of that in a heartbeat.
Unfortunately, I'm aware that Big Oil farms out their stations to the little guys. There's not really a way to directly hurt Big Oil.

I distinctly remember a gas station sign offering gas at $0.23 a gallon. Of course that was forty years ago or more. ;)
