tony snow appreciation thread
i need to take time out from worrying about the dead and dying in iraq, the millions without healthcare in the US who are left to suffer and die and all the starving people around the globe so i can focus all my concern for that great humanitarian, tony snow. all those other problems (many caused by tony's political party and supported by him) pale in comparison to tony's struggle right now so i can't waste another minute of grief on those unimportant matters. i must focus on tony and his struggle.

hope you beat this thing, tony, and live a long life. i know my feelings will echo throughout DU. we want you around for a long time so you can continue to help the corporate fascists by spreading that special propaganda the way only you can. there still seems to be a few people on the globe whose lives haven't been totally ruined by corporate takeover and war and if there's anything that should keep your spirits alive it's the hope that you'll get a chance to ruin the lives of those last few happy people. it's worth living for, tony. we hope you pull through.

61. There's always a chance for "An Atwater Moment"
Edited on Tue Apr-22-08 08:35 PM by Senator
A short version from Thom Hartmann:
Lee Atwater, on his deathbed, realized that the "ends justifies the means" technique of campaigning he had unleashed on behalf of the Bush family was both immoral and harmful to American democracy.

"In 1988, fighting Dukakis, I said that I 'would strip the bark off the little bastard' and 'make Willie Horton his running mate,'" Atwater said. "I am sorry for both statements: the first for its naked cruelty, the second because it makes me sound racist, which I am not. Mostly I am sorry for the way I thought of other people. Like a good general, I had treated everyone who wasn't with me as against me."

But Atwater's spiritual and political protégé, Karl Rove, soldiers on. Big Lies are emerging from Bush allies with startling regularity, and old Big Lies are being resurrected almost daily, most on right-wing talk radio.

Though Atwater did have some level of intellectual capacity, unlike the vacuous Snow and the cheat-first-dodge-questions-afterward, dropout Rove.

Rush, as you say, is likely far more concerned with his stubby than he is with his soul.

Or in the unbelievably twisted logic of some DUers does that also mean I condone everything he's said and done?

I thought DUer's would be smart (or compassionate) enough to separate these two things.

Never been so disappointed to be so wrong.

and I sincerely hope that he recovers from his cancer, as I would any other human being suffering through the pain and fear that cancer invokes. And that doesn't mean that I forget about the suffering of anybody else out there in the world, either. I hate that anybody has to suffer, let alone the multitudes who do. My sympathy for his plight doesn't make me condone his politics or forget about anyone else out there.

15. The passing of an enemy of our nation carries no saddness for me.
He is an evil person. Simple as that. Some seem driven to demonstrate public sympathy and then take a kind of pleasure in lecturing others. Kinda like wearing ones religion on ones sleeve, methinks.

There are not enough facists dying. Things might be a lot different in this country if a few fascists died following the exposure of the coup plot against FDR. Instead some took what they mistakenly believed to be the "high road".

By your last sentence if we give hatred will that not come back to us?

What if we melted Tony's heart with real compassion, could he or anyone else for that matter change for the better?

Again, your last sentence is the logic or justification for doing so.

Did you tell Tony Snow you cared about him before he got cancer? Why wait until he's ill? Because it makes you feel better about yourself?

When he said the quote I posted, was your reply, "Oh Tony, that was a cold-hearted response but I love you anyway?"

Will you feel the same when bush, cheney et al become ill? Why not show your compassion now?

On edit: Do not confuse lack of sympathy for hatred.

The same holds true for Bush and Cheney, I wish they were impeached and tried for war crimes but I don't wish cancer or death on them.

For that matter I'm against capital punishment period.

When Tony said the quote you're speaking of, I thought of him as being in the grip of evil but I would've always loved for him or any other human in that grip to come out of it.

with the Snow quote which you hate so much.

"Q Tony, American deaths in Iraq have reached 2,500. Is there any response or reaction from the President on that?

MR. SNOW: It's a number, and every time there's one of these 500 benchmarks people want something."

Your edit.

On edit: Do not confuse lack of sympathy for hatred.

I don't believe Snow hated the troops, he just didn't have any sympathy for them.

If he can not show sympathy for the troops that died in a illegal war THAT HE HELPED BY SPREADING LIES, then I do not have sympathy for him.

I didn't give him cancer. I didn't wish cancer upon him. If I had caused his cancer by giving him a faulty microwave for Christmas, I would have sympathy for him. However, I did not.

You get what you give.

Edited on Tue Apr-22-08 09:00 PM by Uncle Joe
I was speaking of both, in either case it's a lack of sympathy for suffering. I agree his lack of sympathy is far more troublesome as he supported those putting the troops in a war based on lies. I also agree having sympathy for Snow is far more difficult because of this but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try, as I meant by my first post, that we should strive to be better than Snow.

You get what you give.

87. "...we should strive to be better than Snow."

Lessee here, Tony Snow chose to be the propaganda mouthpiece for an unelected regime that:

started a war based on lies,
tortures people,
spies on its own citizens,
bankrupted the economy,
steals elections,
imprisons political enemies,
exposes covert agents,
and on and on and on and on...

"...we should strive to be better than Snow." Oh, yeah. My lack of sympathy is neck and neck with Snowjob's credentials. Just to make sure, better set up a few straw men:

"By your last sentence if we give hatred will that not come back to us?" I didn't say anything about giving hatred, but you did.

" I never cared for Tony but I never wished cancer or death on him either." Neither did I. Hmm, who keeps bringing that up?

"..with the Snow quote which you hate so much." Again with the hate. Why so angry?

"I don't believe Snow hated the troops, he just didn't have any sympathy for them."

Defer to authoritarian figures much?

90. The first step toward hatred is dehumanization
Edited on Wed Apr-23-08 11:15 AM by Uncle Joe
From your post 32

"Let's find common humanity now. He is a human being..."

“You sure about that?”

You explained that away by editing post 51 and I accepted your explanation as you will see if you read my above post, I said you hated the quote, not Tony.

Post 51

"On edit: Do not confuse lack of sympathy for hatred."

Whether that's classified as hatred or lack of sympathy for someone else's suffering, I believe they're cousins.

I also said in above post that others on this thread wished him cancer or death. You personally didn't wish it from what I can tell but having a lack of sympathy for someone's suffering and imminent death isn't all that far of a cry from it.

The main point I'm trying to make is this, Tony's or anyone else's humanity or lack thereof shouldn't dictate your own, when you let that happen you give up some of your own power to them.

My post 54 explains how I feel about authoritarian figures

The same holds true for Bush and Cheney, I wish they were impeached and tried for war crimes but I don't wish cancer or death on them.

"The same holds true for Bush and Cheney, I wish they were impeached and tried for war crimes but I don't wish cancer or death on them."

Now if I believe Cheney/Bush should be tried for war crimes, what on earth makes you think I would feel any different about someone like Hitler or Charles Taylor!?

I believe the answer is your hatred is cosuming your rational thought and so you strike out in an blind attempt to hurt my conscious, good luck with that. This is what I'm speaking of when I say you've let Tony Snow take your power. Hatred only breeds hatred.

I believe the primary difference between us is that, I believe in justice not hatred.

Speaking of Hitler, if you've ever seen anyone die of cancer, you could easily mistake them for a Concentration Camp victim.

he already got the cancer. we're just pointing out how silly it seems to pour out such fake compassion and emotion for a celebrity fascist when there are millions suffering and dying because of his work and his colleagues.

that's all.

i agree with you about not wishing cancer on anyone.

41. like i said, after watching, literally sitting next to my mother as she died my compassion
isn't fake, i'd feel that way for many people.

I was 17 when she died and i think her illness and subsequent death has a lot to do with why i am a democrat.

44. Maybe some of us don't have a limited quota of compassion
I think I have enough for the soldiers and families AND people I don't necessarily like who have a horrible disease.

Just because you can't muster it doesn't mean other people aren't able to.

not because I believe he's a great humanitarian, but because I want to be. I hope he gets better even considering the problems he and his party have caused millions around the planet the suffering and hatred spread by their ilk, not because I condone it but because I don't.

I hope he gets better and sees the light, changes his ways and sincerely tries to make the world a better place.

Now that I've taken time out for Tony Snow and his battle with cancer, I will go back to taking time out to worry about the rest of Earth.

74. Y'know I doubt Mr. Snow is responsible for all the disasters of the Bush Administration,
nor do I think his disease needs to be heralded as some sort of payback.

And, last I heard cancer isn't particular to a political affiliation. It kills folks across the spectrum.

(fwiw) I have AIDS, so personally I feel I ought to step up and say hey, Cancer isn't a Republican disease.

It's a disease. And a tough one, from what I hear. I can't allow room in my heart to wish it on anyone.

Just my two cents. Thanks.

....and while i certainly don't wish diseases on people like tony snow, i also don't put him at the top of my list to shed a tear for. he at least supports, if he's not partially responsible for, the suffering and death caused by the bush admin. his celebrity doesn't merit him the outpouring of sympathy and warmth that should go to the victims of his party's policies. he's just another douchebag, he's not special in any way.

here's to hoping tony snow and everyone like him simply just go away so we can have common sense and compassion return to government. just think, if we used the 3 trillion $ that this war will have cost us on cancer, aids, diabetes and research to cure other diseases instead, we might have cures by now.

my heart goes out to you and i hope we can get a real cure for hiv soon because i want to have you here for many years to come so we can laugh and discuss and argue with each other. i don't really give two shits about tony snow and whether he lives or dies. he's simply not really important. unfortunately, he used his media celebrity to help push forward a bullshit agenda that included stifling stem cell research that might have saved his dumb ass. his dumb ass ain't worth saving, but the problem is that he's made it hard on the rest of us as well.

hang in there.

Don't you worry Tony, I know you'll be fine. Don't worry about us Tony, we'll be fine. Even though I have to cut my blood pressure pills in half and take half doses since my layoff, I'll find a way to make it. 116. Let's be honest Gato, this thread literally screams that you do wish for his death.
No one is asking anyone to waste time pitying Tony Snow, but wasting time gloating over his imminent death seems rather small, especially for someone with your talent.

As for hell or heaven, if there is one or the other I will leave that up to God or Goddess to determine his fate, but I don't believe we can blog his way in to either.

I really liked your thread regarding McCain and McVeigh, that was creative but this one is just a shame.

I hope you can release your hatred and not let it totally consume you, maybe some George Harrison music would help, he died of cancer as well.

117. seriously UJ, i'm not wishing for anyone's death......
i just get sick sometimes watching some DUers tripping over themselves to praise a dying repub. it's just weird. yeah, you don't have to wish death on them, but the praise and sympathy and pity for these monsters is gross when you consider the suffering and death they heaped on the planet.

in reality, i don't think there;s a hell, but if the world were just there would be a hell and those who support war and exploitation of people and the environment for monetary gain would all go there and burn.

nobody should die of cancer. if we spent the money that we spend on war (experts say bushco's iraq fiasco will end up costing 3 trillion when all is said and done) instead on cancer research, we would have found a cure by now.

yeah, george left us way too soon because of cancer. i'd give a million tony snows to get george back for us. tony snow is a propagandist for the evil side, george wrote "something".

118. I believe if you see DUers praise
a dying repub, it's because as whole we're more in touch with our humanity than the repubs may have been in return, but I don't see that as a weakness.

I recall the Quakers going to the home of the man that murdered their children a year or so back and comforting the murderer's family, that to me is a show of ultimate strength.

If you're not comfortable doing that just ignore the thread.

Peace to you,

UJ

119. hey, i started the thread....why would i ignore it?
and just because i wouldn't be comfortable with comforting the person or family of the person that murdered my family doesn't mean i'm not as good as some quaker who does that.

you see the absurd praise of a dying repub who was loathed here when he was healthy as being in touch with humanity. many here see it as posturing. maybe neither is true. maybe both are true.

you and i don't see eye to eye on everything. we're still on the same side...that's all that matters.

stay healthy!
